THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENTS IN SLOVAKIA
Christmas
People in Slovakia prepare themselves for the Christmas 4 weeks before it. These special 4 weeks are called advent and every Sunday we light a candle. Kids love this time too, because they have got a unique calendar, where they have a surprise for every day until it‘s Christmas.
When all candles burn on the table, it means that the Christmas Eve is almost here. We celebrate Christmas Eve exactly on 24th December. On that day we keep a serious fast.
At the christmas table almost everybody have wafers with honey and garlic as a appetizer, then we have our traditional soup – Sauerkraut soup.
After the dinner people go to the christmas tree and there they find gifts from each other, but children believe that these gifts were given by Jesus.
The next day (25th December) people celebrate the birth of Jesus, they sing Christmas carols (Silent night), they go to church or they visit their families.
