Begin with first typing in your Uniform Resource Locator (URL), or address of your webpage. It begins with your first initial, followed by last name, then “diplomaplus.net” For example “kgeller.diplomaplus.net” “ymorisaki.diplomaplus.net” 16

To access THE LOUNGE and tools to build your page, click the “Admin” link. Two boxes appear for you to input your username and password. 18

After inputting your username (first initial and last name, then password), you will then be brought to “THE LOUNGE.” 19

As in Facebook, you will now access a site to recent recent announcements and postings of various DP National colleagues. Feel free to read people’s post as well as post responses in the box provided. 20

Enter a response in the space provided. You will then see your response posted below. You can also respond to another person’s response (post on their wall), or to comment privately. 21

Telling the World Who You Are 24

After logging into your page, on the right side of your screen is a series of links titled LOUNGE, SITES, COURSES AND LOCKER. Click the “SITES” link. You will be brought to a page where you can begin building your site. 25

To add content to your site, scroll to the right of the first link (in this case, “Instructional School Coach”), and click the “DETAILS” button. A drop down menu appears. 26

1. After clicking the “DETAILS” button, a drop down menu appears. 2. You can now give your page a title, change visuals, decide if you want to publicize it on the “DP Lounge,” as well as whether you want to make it accessible to others. 3. After inputting data, be sure to click the “SAVE” button. 27

You can then view your page by clicking the magnifying glass next to the “DETAILS” button. 28

 Make a list of the things you would like to include on your initial site, things that express your personality. What might you include? Consider  Quotes  Images  Links to other websites, RSS feeds  Calendars 30

You can add additional sites to your home site. From the “SITES” link click the “ADD A SITE” link. A “Choose a Template” menu will appear. 31

Afterwards, you will be brought to a page to repeat the same process used to build your original home site. 32

To each site you can add additional pages. On those pages you can add such materials as files, images, RSS feeds, etc. 33

From the “PAGES” link, simply scroll to the right of a site link and click the “CONTENT” button. A drop down menu appears where you can then select the type of content you want to add. 34

 Spend some time now building your site. Now add the materials you drafted earlier  Quotes  Images  Links to other websites, RSS feeds  Calendars  As well, look at other teacher websites for ideas for your own. (20 minutes) 35

40  DP.NET provides you the platform for making all the important elements of your course available online such as lessons, assessments, outcomes, feedback, content and materials

1. Under the “MAIN” tab, click the “COURSES” link, and then the course title (in this case, “SHORT STORY”). 2. You will be brought to a screen with multiple links saying “ASSIGNMENTS,” “PROGRESS REPORTS,” and “FINAL GRADES.” 3. Under the “ASSIGNMENTS” link, select the trimester of the course for which you are building units. 42

Click the “ADD A NEW ASSIGNMENT” link located at the bottom left hand corner of the screen. This will allow you to add units. In the example here, there are five units already added. 43

After clicking the “ADD A NEW ASSIGNMENT” link, another menu appears. Here you are able to provide information about the course. Several buttons will appear to help you navigate what can be added. They are “DETAILS,” “OUTCOME,” “CONTENT,” “LOCKER,” AND “GRADES.” Upon clicking the “DETAILS,” button a drop down menu appears. 44

1. Add the title for your unit, followed by providing an end date. 2. The end date is the last day of assignments due for that unit. 3. Add objectives, details, descriptions and essential questions in the “Assignment Details/Objectives” box. This information can be pulled directly from your Curriculum Map Template. 4. Next, select the “Top Level” category for your unit. This will tell DP.NET that what you have created is a unit under which you will add other assignments. 45

If you want, you can then publish that you have added details on the DP.NET Lounge. Click the box next to “Share,” then enter an announcement you want to appear about your unit in the lounge. Otherwise, a default announcement will appear on the LOUNGE. 48

1. You do not have to add maximum points for the UNIT, so skip that section. 2. Next, indicate the status of your course by either making it PUBLIC, PASSWORD (PROTECTED), DRAFT, ARCHIVE, OR DELETE. 3. Finally, click the red “SAVE” button to save your work. 49

To see how you page will appear to others when “live,” click the magnifying icon next to the “DETAILS” button. Another window will open and appear. You will then be able to see your page (see sample below). 50

 Spend some time now building your course units. Review your DP planning materials from the summer your Newark Curriculum Maps, and other materials, and begin adding units to each of the courses you teach.  As well, look at other teacher websites for ideas for your own. Use examples that follow as a reference(20 minutes) 51

 In DP.NET, you can also indicate the state standards and competencies covered within a course in each unit and in all assignments.  This feature of DP.NET helps students know students which standards and competencies will be addressed, making unit and assignment outcomes and expectations accessible and explicit. 55

 In DP.NET, Competencies and Standards are called “OUTCOMES.” 56

 You can use your DP unit planning template from our summer training to tell DP.NET which standards and competencies will be addressed across a course’s units. 57

For example, as shown in this curriculum map for the teacher’s “Short Story” Course. 58

 Standards Select the standards required in the course content you are teaching. Typically these are the prioritized standards, meaning those most addressed by state assessments, and the ways of thinking and performing essential to post- secondary success and participation in the larger world. For Newark School District, this may mean those already specified within your curriculum maps. 59

 Because your curriculum maps already include the standards to be addressed, you can simply upload those standards into your course. 60

61  Competencies Select competencies that will support students’ demonstration of the standards. For example, in the Short Story Course, the “writing processes” competency (E06) was used to measure students’ demonstration of NYS ELA Standard #2— ”students will read, write, speak and listen for literary response and expression.” Select at least one to two DP Personal Competencies. Select three to five competencies for your course that can be assessed at least three times across the units so that students may experience deep and enriching exploration of the skills being learned and assessed.

Under the MAIN tab, click the COURSES link, then the course you want to add outcomes. Select the unit. Scroll to the right and a menu of several buttons appear. Click the “OUTCOMES” button for the drop down menu where you can select which standards and competencies you want to address. 62

63 On this new screen you will select the unit’s competencies. Click the “+” button next to your content area ( ex. English) to select the unit’s competencies.

Click the icon next to “PERSONAL” to select the personal competencies students are expected to demonstrate for this unit. 64

To select standards, click on the “+” sign next to the appropriate standard(s). Because DP.NET will want you to select the most specific indicator possible, proceed until you reach a box where you can record a check. Check the box so that standard will attached to the unit. Be sure to click the “SAVE” button. Repeat this process for each unit. 65

 Spend some time now building your COURSE site.  Upload standards and competencies for each unit you are teaching  For new teachers go to the following website, review the competencies for your content area and the personal ones, and select 1-2 personal and 2- 3 content competencies  ( iplomaplus/pdf/CompetencyP acket-2008.pdf)  As well, look at other teacher websites for ideas for your own. (20 minutes) 66

Like for site pages, you can electronically add all the instructional resources and learning materials used throughout the unit by selecting the “CONTENT” button. You can add such things as assignment sheets that are word files, images, calendar of due dates, web links to relevant web pages, etc. 67

After clicking the “CONTENT” button, a drop down menu appears where you can indicate what type of material you want to upload. Once saved to your DP.NET account, they will be stored in the “LOCKER” for you to readily access at a later time. 68

For example, in the “A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words” Unit, students will be reading various online comic books that model telling a story without text. 69

The web pages where the stories were located have been loaded into the unit, along with a brief description... 70
