Urban myths No legal requirement for employers to provide resources Points or hours are not involved It’s not just about attending meetings You do not have to be a member of a professional body in order to meet the HPC's Standards for CPD
Facts All registrants irrespective of whether they work full-time, part-time, on a permanent or locum basis are required to meet the Standards The onus is on the individual to select which CPD activities best suit them and will allow them to meet the standards.
CPD Standards are not explicitly linked to AfC nor linked to KSF. This is because the HPC are a UK-wide regulator and regulate healthcare professionals in a variety of settings including the NHS, private practice and education. In order to remain registered and to use the protected title all registrants including academics, researchers and managers must continue to meet the standards. These standards are how a registrant’s 'fitness to practise' is determined.
I will be going on maternity leave. Will I still have to do CPD while not at work? This information relates to any registrant considering remaining registered whilst on a career break. The HPC agreed a new returners to practice process, which took effect from July This process means that a break of up to two years and be taken whilst remaining on the Register. In practise, this means that in order to renew registration (which happens every two years), you will need to have practised your profession at some point during the two year registration period which is coming to an end. This enables you to sign your professional declaration to say that you have 'practised your profession since your last renewal'.
What is CPD? “a range of learning activities through which health professionals maintain and develop throughout their career to ensure that they retain their capacity to practice safely, effectively and legally within their evolving scope of practice.” This definition was written as part of the Allied Health Professions project, ‘Demonstrating competence through CPD’.
The Standards maintain a continuous, up-to-date and accurate record of their CPD activities demonstrate that their CPD activities are a mixture of learning activities relevant to current or future practice seek to ensure that their CPD has contributed to the quality of their practice and service delivery seek to ensure that their CPD benefits the service user; and present a written profile containing evidence of their CPD upon request.
The registrant must: 1.Maintain a continuous, up-to- date and accurate record of their CPD activities
Continuous – update records regularly Up-to-date – activities undertaken over the previous two years of registration Accurate – the record is a true reflection of the activities undertaken Record – kept in your own way
The registrant must: 2.Demonstrate that their CPD activities are a mixture of learning activities relevant to current or future practice.
Mixture of learning activities – different types of learning. If only present one kind of activity will not meet the standard Relevant to current or future practice – relevant to what you are doing now or what you might plan to do in the future
The registrant must: 3.Seek to ensure that their CPD has contributed to the quality of their practice and service delivery. 4.Seek to ensure that their CPD benefits the service user.
Benefits – to you and how you work (Std 3) and benefit to others (Std 4) ‘Seek to ensure’ – your CPD should aim to benefit the way in which you work and your service users – confidence, self/team-development Service users – anyone who uses your services or is affected by what you do – clear benefits to service users
The registrant must: 5.Present a written profile containing evidence of their CPD upon request.
Only need to meet this standard if selected for audit Profile sent to practitioner as well as guidance notes Proposed new standard 5 – Registrants must, 'upon request, present a written profile (which must be their own work and supported by evidence) explaining how they have met the standards for CPD'
CPD Process At each registration renewal a self-declaration that the registrant continues to meet the Council’s Standards of CPD Sample audits of registrants taken at random from each part of the register Will only sample registrants who have been on the register for at least two years
Audit process Notification sent out at same time as renewal notices - September 3 months to submit profile Reminder after 2 months If incomplete 28 days to resubmit completed profile
………….. Assessors may request ‘further information’ – 28 days to reply Assessors may give ‘further time’ – 3 months to address shortfalls If registrant does not meet standards registration not renewed Decision subject to registration appeals procedures

Profile structure Profile templates and guidance available in two formats 1.Hard copy – handwritten 2.Electronic
List of CPD activities (for last two years) Summary of recent work (for last two years) words (based on job description) Statement of how standards have been met words Supporting evidence (from personal record)
The summary of your practice history should help to show the HPC how your CPD activities are linked to your work. This part of the profile should help you to show how your activities are relevant to your current or future work. Your statement of how you have met the standards should clearly show how you believe you meet each of the standards, and should refer to all the CPD activities you have undertaken and the evidence you are sending in to support your statement.
Evidence should back up the statements made in your CPD profile Evidence should show that you have undertaken the CPD activities you have referred to, and should show how they have improved the quality of your work and benefited service users Evidence should include a summary of all your CPD activities (therefore meet standard 1) Evidence should also show that your CPD activities are a mixture of learning activities and are relevant to your work (and so meet Std 2)
Deferrals The HPC recognise that in some circumstances a practitioner may not be able to submit a profile A practitioner may write in and request deferral – providing the reason and evidence If someone defers they will automatically be selected for audit next time
Assessment of the profile Profile is assessed by CPD assessors ‘Partners’ of HPC Working in pairs Assessment days run at HPC
So far only Chiropodists & podiatrists and Operating Department Practitioners have been audited Paramedics and Orthoptists will be audited next as they begin their renewal period Most of the profiles are assessed at Park House on a series of assessment days which generally begin at the start of the final month of the renewal cycle
Typically a pair of assessors will assess profiles in a day Profiles assessed by two assessors, one of whom will be from the same profession as the registrant being audited Typical amounts of evidence are tricky to quantify. The majority of profiles are generally between pages including the written statements.
24 CPD assessors have been used across 11 assessment days Registrants appear to have clearly understood the procedures for submitting profiles As yet nobody has been rejected for submitting a profile that does not meet the standards after requests for further information and the further three months which is available at the assessors discretion in order for a registrant to be able to undertake additional activities
