Exploitation of ISS Scientific data EGI-Aparsen Workshop March Science Park– Amsterdam – The Netherlands Cooperative ISS Research data Conservation and Exploitation

March EGI-Aparsen Workshop2 Motivation for space data preservation Peculiarity of space experiments:  Space data is precious and has very relevant scientific value  Need for Preservation and Exploitation  a wide range of scientific domains is involved  the preparation time is very long  space missions are very expensive  repetition/extension of successful experiments also requires long time and is expensive  space experiments are selected by a rigorous peer review  Data preservation will allow the scientific community to easily retrieve and use data, also in the long term, through a simple and unique access point

March EGI-Aparsen Workshop3 Courtesy of ESA International Space Station  ISS allows research in many different scientific disciplines, as:  astronomy  radiation physics  plasma physics  space technology  astrobiology  atmosphere and environment  human physiology and medicine  material science  fluid science & combustion  biology  ISS exploitation is part of the ESA ELIPS programme exposed pressurized  The International Space Station is the largest laboratory for conducting research in space

March EGI-Aparsen Workshop4 European experiments in space

March EGI-Aparsen Workshop5 European experiments in space

March EGI-Aparsen Workshop6 European experiments in space

March EGI-Aparsen Workshop7 Courtesy of ESA European experiments in space  ELIPS achievements (i.e. ELIPS-1/-2/-3, period) - #investigations:  Ground-based facilities: ~ 100  Parabolic flights: ~ 500  Sounding rockets: ~60  Retrievable capsules: ~85  ISS: ~230  ELIPS-4 near-term projections ( period) - #investigations (per annum):  Ground-based facilities: 25 to 35  Parabolic flights: 20 to 35  Sounding rockets: up to 5  ISS: 35 to 45  ISS data production: ~6-8 TB/year Source: ESA HSO

March EGI-Aparsen Workshop10 Concept  ISS data e-infrastructure core services:  Data & knowledge collection  processing of raw data and creation of exploitable data files in standard format  creation of metadata  validation of the data files and contents  Provision of easy-to-use tools for:  contents (metadata) navigation, querying, browsing, requesting data, in compliance with the applicable data policy  Data management  processes for data preservation  user accounting and requests  accounting of preserved contents  accounting of utilization of preserved contents and the assignment of related credits  Data and contents preservation (TBD)

March EGI-Aparsen Workshop11 Concept  Possible federated services with other infrastructures:  Authentication and Accounting  common ID of European researchers  single login  Data preservation  archive and preservation of exploitable datasets, in compliance with restricted access requirements (TBD)  assignment of unique ID for digital resources  tools for data preservation and verification  Open Access  provision of bibliometric reports  monitoring publications for credits assignment verification  HPC  provision of HPC capabilities upon user request  repositories of software for simulation and data analysis  ESFRI and domain-specific infrastructures  datasets  standard ontologies  tools for data processing, analysis and visualization

March EGI-Aparsen Workshop13 Roadmap  Drivers:  achievement of a common vision of data preservation among ISS partners, in terms of data policy, common services, functionalities and processes  data preservation must be science-driven; objectives, services and functionalities must meet the needs of the user communities  best use of available funding sources through coordinated programmes (within ESA, Horizon 2020 and national programmes)  existing national and international assets must be exploited

March EGI-Aparsen Workshop14 Roadmap  Main steps:  0.Temporarily preservation collection and archive of raw data (telemetry) and documentation  1.Approach to data preservation define common strategies for contents collection and validation, a common policy for data use, guidelines for metadata and ontologies  2.System specifications and design  3.Data preservation develop and release tools and components for data preservation  4.Data access develop and release tools and components for data access  5.Support data exploitation provision of full se of services for data exploitation

March EGI-Aparsen Workshop15 Roadmap  Implementation approach:  Temporarily preservation ESA LTDP Programme  Approach to data preservation  1. System specifications and design  2. Data preservation  3. Data access  Support data exploitation H2020 Coordination Action H2020 R&I Action H2020 Support & Coordination Action
