A Space Wedding

Yuri Malenchenko is a Colonel in the Russian Air Force. He was born on December 22, 1961 in Svetlovodsk, Ukraine.

Malenchenko became the first person to marry in space, on 10 August 2003, when he married Ekaterina Dmitrieva, who was in Texas, while he was 240 miles over New Zealand, on the International Space Station.

Malenchenko wore a formal flight uniform, not a tuxedo. He and his best man, spaceshipmate Edward Lu (a NASA ISSScience Officer & Flight Engineer), had a video linkup which was categorized as a “Private Family Conference” and was not publicly broadcast over NASA TV.

About two hundred people attended the 25-minute service at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The bride blew the groom a kiss. He blew one back – from 240 miles in space. After the private ceremony Ekaterina Dmitrieva talked at a press conference in Seabrook, Texas.

A life-size cutout of the groom greeted guests at the reception. The guests were treated to Italian and Russian dishes. They were impressed with the giant fruit bowl in the forms of the space station, the space shuttle, and the two lovebirds.

On the 7th of August, 2004 the cosmic couple, Yuri Malenchenko and Ekaterina Dmitrieva, got married in the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Tutaev. They celebrated the event in the club "Cosmos“ there.
