This drawing by Jan Boenisch is of Brymbo steel works. The artist has succeeded in conveying the activity, heat and atmosphere of the works using pencil marks quickly and decisively, and by contrasting cold colours (black and blue) with warm colours (yellow, orange and red). Jan Boenisch Brymbo Steelworks 1. Discussion

Where do you think the artist created the work?

It shows how local people used to dress as well as some of the modes of transport used during the period. It's surprising to think that this was the scene in front of the artist when painting the picture. Look carefully at the picture. Describe what might be different to what we see today in a similar scene by focusing on the clothes of the characters and boats. Joseph Josiah Dodd Caernarfon castle, Market Day This image of Caernarfon Castle was produced by Joseph Dodd in the nineteenth century. 1. Discussion

In this painting by Gwilym Pritchard we see a completely different style from Joseph Dodd. The artist has chosen to simplify the form of the farmhouse, the clouds and the hedges. By reflecting red sky in the windows of the building and in the bushes, Gwilym Pritchard has successfully unified the composition. The use of texture and the thickness of the paint gives the image depth. Gwilym Pritchard Red Sky and Farmhouse

This work by Will Roberts shows a man working hard in his garden. By using similar colours to represent the land, as well as the gardener, the artist has managed to reflect the importance of the work for him. This use of colour also suggests that the gardener grows at work, as a tree grows from the ground. Will Roberts The Gardener

The portrait of this Hywel Williams by Tom Rathmel is produced in the traditional manner. We can see that the sitter is placed in the centre of the composition and is looking directly at us. By looking closer we can see more about the Hywel Williams. He has chosen to sit in a suit and tie that gives it an atmosphere of dignity, but, again, the background of the picture shows a very simple environment suggesting that there is no self importance in his dignity. Tom Rathmel Williams, Dolgellau
