MIGRATION People/Ideas/Material/Industrial

Human Migration Human Migration is the movement by people from one place to another with the intention of settling in the new location. The movement is typically over long distances and from one country to another, but internal migration is also possible. Migration may be used to refer to large groups.

Cardiff Bay Docks

TIGER BAY (aka Cardiff Bay) Cardiff's dockland district - is Wales' oldest multi-ethnic community. Sailors and workers from over 50 countries settled here.

INTERACIAL MARRIAGE Residents of many races and backgrounds socialised together and intermarried, creating a distinct community.

Singer Shirley Bassey is Tiger Bay's most famous export, moving from work in bars/clubs to becoming a world-class performer. And the world famous author Roald Dahl was born Cardiff whose parents were Norwegian, was christened in the Norwegian Church, which now serves as an Arts Centre. SHIRLEY BASEY ROALD DAHL

Craft in The Bay Madonna & Child by Aran Illingworth: "My work focuses on women and their social situation - particularly on predicaments associated with poverty... the work of embroidery and decoration of textiles is associated with women – this is, historically speaking, an undervalued activity."

National Assembly for Wales The 1970s and 80s saw a new influx of refugees from conflicts around the world, and the 90s saw the birth of the renewal of the area as a leisure and business hot-spot and the founding of the regeneration scheme.

Migration report shows Cardiff is the place to be.

The report suggests as well as students coming to study, work is another major factor in people moving to South Wales, with workers from the EU mirroring the journeys of those who moved to Tiger Bay in the 1950s. It said: “Eight central and eastern European countries joined the EU in May 2004 and were given the right to work in the UK. This was a key factor in the number of international migrants moving to Wales increasing by 46% between 2005 and 2008.

Cardiff Barrage

The Cardiff Bay Barrage is 1.1km long and extends from Cardiff docks in the north to Penarth in the south. This major civil engineering construction project led to the impoundment of the bay that has over 13km of waterfront. This 120 million pound project (commenced in 1987) was the start of the 2 billion pound regeneration of the old docklands areas.

Water Buses

Black History Month Butetown History & Arts Centre has been involved with Black History Month celebrations for the past couple of years. Activities reflect the diverse population of the Butetown area where people of all ethnic origins and religions live together in harmony.
