The Causes of the American Revolution SS4H4

The Standard SS8H3 The student will analyze the role of Georgia in the American Revolution. a. Explain the immediate and long-term causes of the American Revolution and their impact on Georgia; include the French and Indian War (Seven Years War), Proclamation of 1763, Stamp Act, Intolerable Acts, and the Declaration of Independence.

Essential Question Why did King George III impose so many taxes on the colonists?

The French and the British Colonies The British and the French fought for control of the area west of the Appalachian Mountains.

French and Indian War The Indians (Native Americans) helped the French fight the British. The Spanish helped the French too! The French and Indian War started in 1754!

Treaty of Paris This treaty ended the French and Indian War in Under the terms of the treaty, France gave Canada and all of its land east of the Mississippi River to Great Britain.

Treaty of Paris The British also gained control of Florida which had been a Spanish colony. The Spanish had been an ally of the French during the war.

Royal Proclamation of 1763 This law made it illegal for colonists to move west of the Appalachian Mountains. Many colonists simply chose to ignore the law and moved west anyway.

This resulted in a number of attacks by Native Americans on the settlers. The Native Americans were afraid their land would be taken away. Royal Proclamation of 1763

Uh-Oh! Time to pay up homey! After the French and Indian War, King George III sent the colonies a bill for the French and Indian War!

Time to pay for the French and Indian War The British made the colonists pay several taxes on necessary items. This was called British Imperial Policy.

Time to pay!!! One example is the Sugar Act of This tax put a three- cent tax on non-British sugar. This tax was meant to prevent colonists from buying goods that did not come from Britain.

More taxes!!!!! The Stamp Act placed a tax on paper goods such as newspapers, contracts, and playing cards.

Sons of Liberty Part of larger group, the “Sons of Liberty” Georgians who came together to oppose the Stamp Act. Some called them “Liberty Brawlers”. Met in taverns, such as Savannah’s Tondee’s Tavern.

Colonists had enough!!!!! There were British soldiers in Boston who were supposed to keep order.

Boston Massacre On March 5, 1770, British soldiers fired upon a group of unarmed colonists, killing five of them. After this incident, the British troops left Boston. This was known as the Boston Massacre.

Boston Tea Party In May 1773, the British passed the Tea Act to help the British East India Company. This allowed the company to sell directly to the American colonists.

Boston Tea Party Many colonists opposed the Tea Act. In protest, they dressed up as Mohawk Indians, boarded the boat with the new load of British tea, and dumped it all into Boston Harbor. This was known as the Boston Tea Party.

No Taxation…….. The colonists wanted to be represented in the British Parliament. But the King said, “NO!” The colonists said, “No taxation without representation!”

Intolerable Acts King George III said the tea in Boston Harbor would have to be paid for.

Intolerable Acts… The Intolerable Acts had four major effects: 1.Closed Boston Harbor 2.Cancelled the Massachusetts Royal Charter 3.People accused of crimes in Massachusetts were tried in Great Britain. 4.Quartering Act – Citizens of Massachusetts were forced to house and feed British troops at their own expense.
