Abstract Student Name: Alex White, Alberto Him, Ashwin Leo Category: Microbiology Project Title: From Sunburn to Sterilizer Abstract: Food poisoning is a huge health concern worldwide, and is even a problem in industrialized countries like the US. Making sure your food is safe and free of harmful bacteria is essential to prevent illness and health problems caused by food poisoning. For our experiment, we proposed a new idea to help rid food of harmful bacteria. We hypothesized that UV radiation can be used to eradicate harmful bacteria on food. We tested our hypothesis by using a harmless strain of e. coli bacteria (to model the harmful strains) combined with an antibiotic and a plasmid resistant to that antibiotic to prevent foreign bacteria growth. We put the bacteria on plates with nutrient rich lysogeny broth to simulate food. We then grouped the plates according to the different UV radiation dosages that they were to receive, with the control group receiving no radiation. We put each group into a UV strata linker to deliver an exact amount of UV radiation. After incubation, we counted the number of colonies in each plate. Our results showed that UV radiation about the dosage of 4 mJ/cm^2, which a common UV light bulb can deliver in mere seconds, effectively killed all the bacteria colonies, and confirmed our hypothesis. This experiment showed us that UV radiation is a good way to eradicate bacteria, sterilize food, and prevent food poisoning. Using the results of our experiment, we modified a microwave to sterilize food that you don’t want to cook by installing a UV light.
