HASTINGS HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR ALTERNATIVES PROGRAM School Year

Its Purpose A way of making productive use of the students’ time and energy while maintaining a close connection to school and friends.

The Goals Goals vary from student to student:  Learn professional and technical skills in a specific field of interest  Explore a possible career or area of study  Expand intellectual skills through research experiences  Learn about the general demands of the world of work  Build your interpersonal and communication skills  Engage in a self-directed activity without grades as the motivation  Carry out a project or try a new activity

The Specifics  Students will be assigned a Supervising Teacher who will support them in finding an internship, monitoring the student’s progress, and serving as liaison with the student’s Sponsor.  Students will arrange an internship or activity, either on their own or with the help of their supervising teacher, parent, family friend.  The “Student Placement” form must be completed with required signatures by March 23, 2016.

The specifics (continued) In May:  Internships start on May 16 (after A.P. exams).  Supervising Teachers keep in touch with students and sponsors In June:  On Monday, June 13, students will make a presentation to parents, faculty, other students and community members about their Senior Alternative experiences at the Senior Internship Fair.

Student Responsibilities  Work with her or his Supervising Teacher to select or design an internship or activity.  Interview with Sponsors of interest.  Work with the Sponsor to determine specific assignments.  Follow Sponsor’s policies regarding hours, personal appearance, behavior, and office practices.  Report to the internship at least 20 hours a week.  Meet with the Supervising Teachers twice during the internship.  Turn in weekly timesheets and to Supervising Teacher.

Sponsor Responsibilities  Orient the intern to the agency/organization.  Meet with the intern regularly to review progress and performance.  Speak with the Supervising Teacher to discuss the intern’s progress.  Sign the intern’s weekly timesheet.  Complete an exit interview with the intern.

Supervising Teacher’s Responsibilities  Assist student in considering interests and locating an internship.  Speak with the sponsor regularly to discuss the intern’s progress.  Sign off on weekly timesheets  Help with any problems that arise during the internship.
