MLA Different formats for documentation. English classes use MLA - Modern Language Association Resources – –

WHEN DO I NEED TO CITE? Whenever you… borrow words or ideas use quotes paraphrase use an idea that someone else has already expressed make specific reference to the work

How do I do this? 1.Keep track of ever place you get information! 2.If you cut and paste from an Internet page, copy the exact address as well. 3.Make sure you put the Notes or Information with the correct Location! You need enough information to locate the text again.

What is a dirct quote? Taking the exact words from an original source. This is your EVIDENCE. You should use direct quotes when you believe the way the original idea is the most effective way to make the point. * If you want to borrow an idea from an author, but do not need his or her exact words, paraphrase!

What is paraphrasing? To rephrase an author’s ideas or information in your own words. The key is to use as few words as possible from the original text! Don’t change the meaning! Use a citation!

SO, I USED A QUOTE OR I PARAPHRASED A COUPLE OF LINES. NOW WHAT? Both direct quotes AND paraphrases are evidence. So, now, you need warrants. For each quote or paraphrase, you should have at least 1 sentence of explanation or warrant.

What are parenthetical citations? Indicate the entry in the Works Cited from which you got your evidence. Evidence: “The primary goal in this case is to save a young life.” Evidence with Citation When a patient has Hodgkin's Lymphoma, “the primary goal in this case is to save a young life” (Caplan).

ALL EVIDENCE MUST HAVE A PARENTHETICAL CITATION No Exception

How do I know what text to put in my ( )parenthesis? Signal word in the () is the first word (or group of words in the corresponding entry of the Works Cited page. Remember the example before? When a patient has Hodgkin's Lymphoma, “the primary goal in this case is to save a young life” (Caplan). It came from this Works Cited Entry. Caplan, Arthur. "Bioethicist: Why Connecticut Teen Can't Say No to Chemo." NBC News. NBC News, 8 Jan Web. 12 Jan Signal word!

How do I start? The first time you cite a source, give the author(s), title, and genre (book, article, or web page, etc.). Milan Kundera, in his book The Art of the Novel, suggests that “if the novel should really disappear, it will do so not because it has exhausted its powers but because it exists in a world grown alien to it” (15).

How do I start? The first time you cite a source, give the author(s), title, and genre (book, article, or web page, etc.). Juliet Eilperin in her article “An emotional Obama flexes his executive muscle on gun control” writes, “A key provision of the new initiative would require more gun sellers …to be licensed and therefore to conduct background checks on potential buyers.“

When using articles that were originally printed, make sure you select the correct type of citation in EasyBib. Not on note pages
