MALAY CIVILIZATION

WHO ARE THE MALAYS? An Austronesian group of peoples from Southeast Asia that inhabits the Malay Peninsula and islands of the Malay Archipelago, Indonesia, Brunei, southern Thailand and southern Philippines. Speak the Malay language, and a defining trait of an ethnic Malay is one who follows Islam and adheres to Malay customs. Found in Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and minority race in Thailand and Sri Lanka.

WHO ARE THE MALAYS? In Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei, the ethnic Malays speak the standard form of Malay which knows as “Bahasa Malayu” or “Malay Language”. Various people from Borneo also speak their own Malay dialects or creoles like those living in the Malaysian provinces of Sabah and Sarawak.

ISLAM IN MALAY CIVILIZATION The arrival of islam began in the eight of centuries. There are several different theories about the coming of Islam to Southeast Asia. 1. Directly through the sea trade from the Arab countries, 2. The land trade routes to the Indian subcontinent, before coming to the region of Southeast Asia. 3. The route commercial land to China first before following the sea trade routes in Southeast Asia.

ISLAM IN MALAY CIVILIZATION Effects and values of Islam can be found in almost all aspect of community life and civilization of the Malay. Coming of Islam to form a new Malay civilization and it can be said to strengthen (or establish) Malay civilization. Empire of Malacca and other Malay Muslim sultanate became centres of intellectual and Malay literature.

MALAYS CIVILIZATION AS THE FOUNDATION OF MALAYSIA Malaysia’s early beginnings was traced to the founding of the city state of a Malay traditional kingdom, Malacca. It was populated by different types of the ethnic groups originating from the Malay Archipelago, like the Malays, Minangkabau, Jawa, Bugis, Boyan, and Batak groups that share similar traditions as they are from the same civilization. The idea of nation-building had never crossed the minds of the Malayan society until the arrival of the British colonial masters.

MALAYS CIVILIZATION AS THE FOUNDATION OF MALAYSIA As a result of the British’s policy, the society was forced to accept a different administration structure, from the Malay Sultanate kingdom to a British government with a Resident as its ruler. The long colonialization period had brought major changes in the demographic structure of Malaya, from a nation that was built upon the traditions of the Malay culture, to a multi-ethnic nation consisting of the Chinese, Indian and other ethnicities that embrace different traditions.
