The Cold War Intro Essential Question: – What was the Cold War? Objective: – To understand, in a basic sense, what the Cold War was, and its importance in modern world history. Homework: – Read and take notes on Glencoe 20.1 ( ) FYI: It’s really important to read and have notes on this for next class!

The Cold War Unit intro and essential questions

The World Since WWII Big things in the world since since 1945: – The Cold War – conflict between democratic/capitalist and communist countries Democratic/capitalist countries won – End of European colonialism and creation of new nations Most colonies gained independence by 1965 – New freedoms and rights International insistence on human rights Social movements gaining rights for women, ethnic minorities, sexual minorities, other oppressed groups – Globalization and economic development Rapid advances in communication technology Increased international migration Economic growth and interdependence Population boom and urbanization, especially in the developing world Environmental challenges, most significantly climate change

So... We’re zooming in on a few topics: – Primarily, the Cold War – But also, decolonization and new nations But let’s keep all of these things in mind as we do. In short: – During this time, the world was becoming more prosperous (though unequally), more crowded, more interconnected, more technologically advanced (and dependent), and more polluted.

What was the Cold War? A period of political and military tensions between the US and its allies (NATO and others) and the Soviet Union and its allies (Warsaw Pact) Often framed as a struggle between capitalism and communism or democracy and communism No direct fighting, instead: – Arms race (especially nuclear weapons) – Espionage – Propaganda – Technological competition (like the space race) – Proxy wars through allies in Asia, Africa and Latin America

The Cold War: Essential Questions How did the Cold War develop? How did the US and USSR compete with one another for power? Why did the Soviet Union lose? How were other countries caught up in this fight, especially those emerging from colonialism?
