Introduction to the Integumentary System Chapter 4 Vocabulary Part of the body where it’s found

Review What is a cell? What is a tissue? – What are the 4 types of tissues we just learned about? What is an organ? – Two or more kinds of tissues grouped together and performing specialized functions

What is the largest organ in your body? How can the skin be classified as an organ? – Epithelial and connective tissue = cutaneous membrane (skin) Cutaneous membrane (skin) + other accessory organs = integumentary system

Membranes Consist of epithelium and underlying connective tissue. 1.Serous membranes Line body cavities that do not have openings outside the body (parietal) Pleura (thoracic cavity) Pericardium (heart) Peritoneum (abdominal cavity) Cover organs within body cavities (visceral) Simple squamous epithelial tissue + thin loose (areolar) connective tissue

Membranes 2.Mucous membranes Line body cavities and tubes that open outside the body Oral and nasal passages Tubes of digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive systems – Epithelial tissue + loose connective tissue – Goblet cells secrete mucus

Membranes 3.Synovial membranes Form inner linings of joint cavities Between the ends of bones and freely-moving joints (synovial joints) Dense connective tissue + loose connective & adipose tissue Cells secrete synovial fluid

Membranes 4.Cutaneous membrane Skin Stratified squamous epithelium + various connective tissues

Skin Functions – Maintain homeostasis – Protective covering – Regulates body temperature – Prevents water loss – Excretes small amounts of wastes

Tissue Layers of the Skin Epidermis – outer layer – Stratified squamous epithelium Basement membrane Dermis – inner layer – Thicker than epidermis – Connective tissues Collagenous/elastic fibers Smooth muscle Nervous tissue Blood
