PREPOSITION REVIEW

MOST IMPORTANTLY KNOW YOUR PREPOSITIONS!!!! - YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE YOUR NOTES ON THE TEST  aboutbehindduringoffto  abovebelowexceptontowards  acrossbeneathforontounder  afterbesidefromoppositeunderneath  againstbesidesinoutuntil  alongbetweeninsideoutsideup  amongbeyondintooverupon  around  asbutlikepastwith  atbynearsincewithin  beforedownofthroughwithout

AND DON’T FORGET ABOUT THOSE PESKY COMPOUND PREPOSITIONS!  according toby means ofinstead of  ahead ofin addition tonext to  aside fromin back ofon account of  as ofin front ofon top of  because ofin place ofout of

MAKE SURE YOU ALSO KNOW THIS INFORMATION:  Prepositions affect the way a noun or pronoun relates to other words in the sentence.  A prepositional phrase is a group of words that begins with a preposition and ends with an object of the preposition (noun or pronoun.)  REMEMBER-If it is not a preposition, then it does not start a prepositional phrase!

 Some prepositional phrases contain only two words (the preposition and the object of the preposition).  Others are longer because they contain modifiers.  Sometimes you have two or more prepositional phrases next to each other, make sure to show that they are separate phrases.  If there are two prepositions next to each other in a sentence, the first one does not have a prepositional phrase.

AND LASTLY….  Watch out for adverbs and infinitives.  The subject and verb of the sentence will NEVER be in a prepositional phrase.

SO WHAT WILL THE TEST LOOK LIKE?  I don’t want to give too much away, but here’s some basic information:  You will need to be able to correctly find and label prepositional phrases in sentences/paragraphs.  You will need to be able to complete sentences with appropriate prepositions.  You will need to be able to create several prepositional phrases that go together (similar to a prepositional phrase poem…)  You will need to be able to correctly complete definitions for things like object of the preposition, compound preposition, etc.
