CURRENT LIVESTOCK FAQ GENERAL ITEMS EID QUESTIONS ANIMAL SPECIFIC COMING SOON

CURRENT LIVESTOCK FAQ-GENERAL What is the Cost Breakdown? DNA Nominations $6.00 Breeding Card Nominations $2.00 EID Tags (no charge for 2016) Where do we get the County Livestock Affidavits? Where can we see the Fairbooks for State Fair?

CURRENT LIVESTOCK FAQ-GENERAL Can we add multiple sibling names to the DNA collector envelope and breeding nomination cards? Yes What if I need more Breeding Nomination Cards? You can request more cards from Brandy Wagner

CURRENT LIVESTOCK FAQ-EID What if we damage an EID tag and cannot use it? We will have you ship the unused damage tag to the Nebraska Department of Ag (NDA). Contact Brandy Wagner if replacements are needed Should we keep the bag number that the EID tags came in? Yes How can we keep track of matched pairs of the EID button and the visual tag? Search bag number in Master EID file to see all matched sets

CURRENT LIVESTOCK FAQ-EID Will counties need to purchase scanners to read the EID tags? The EID tags will have a visible number that can be used for identification. The NDA has 40 RS250 scanners available for checkout at no cost. (this is a very basic scanner) How can I checkout a scanner? Complete the survey with your desired dates

CURRENT LIVESTOCK FAQ-EID What if our family inserts the wrong visual tag with the EID button? Use the EID number as the proper identification number. Ask your family to inform you of any incorrect visual tags with the buttons and notify Brandy Wagner of the new paired set What if I tagged the animal in the right ear instead of the left ear? It is recommended you tag the animal in the left ear but it is not required

CURRENT LIVESTOCK FAQ-EID What if the animal loses an EID tag? If a tag is lost, there will be a similar re-tagging process as we have had in the past. Families will need to inform County Staff and then reported to AKSARBEN the retag information Do we need to put both the EID number and visual number on the DNA collector envelope? It is highly recommended (see next slide for visual)

CURRENT LIVESTOCK FAQ-BEEF What is the process for designation of a beef animal being nominated for State Fair? A heifer that is identified as a market heifer by April 15 can be changed and re-identified as breeding by June 15. The animal will need to have a breeding nomination card completed by and submitted by June 15. June 15 th changes are final. Do we remove the EID tag from now breeding beef entry? No, leave the EID tag in the ear

CURRENT LIVESTOCK FAQ If market ewes or does have an EID tag, will I ALSO need a scrapies tag?  YES All ewes and does (market and breeding) must have the USDA Official ID tag in place (part of scrapie eradication program)

COMING SOON… Livestock exhibitor handbook State fair schedule State fair livestock rules Aksarben validation training (4/6)

BLOW & GO GUIDELINES

Context behind the decision Joint decision by 4-H, FFA, and State Fair Successfully implemented with 2015 Showmanship Mainly a space issue 1220 stalls in the beef barn 1080 head entered last year Limited room for tack, supplies, feed, as it was No longer able to put chutes on the west end of the hog barn

BLOW & GO GUIDELINES Context (cont.) Two options Restrict entry limits further Reduce the need for additional tack and supplies Other reasons in the decision-making process Could help to reduce cost to families Speed up loading/unloading process Did not feel it would change the outcome of the show and/or influence quality of animals exhibited

BLOW & GO GUIDELINES N. GROOMING OF LIVESTOCK: Preparation and grooming of an animal should be the primary responsibility of the State Fair exhibitor; however, assistance may be provided by other State Fair youth exhibitors and/or immediate family members. Beef Shows including Showmanship, Market Beef and Breeding Beef will be Blow and Go in 2016; animals may be clipped, blown and brushed or combed to enhance their appearance. Guidelines for the Blow and Go show:

BLOW & GO GUIDELINES 1. Beef animals will be shown free of any adhesive, glue, paint, or powder products. 2. Any compounds that have adhesive qualities that when applied cannot be combed or brushed through or alter the color of the animal are forbidden. These products include but are not limited to commonly used adhesives and colorants such as Prime Time, EZ Comb, Tail Adhesive, Ultra White Touch-Up, Black Touch-Up, Black Finisher and black show foam.

BLOW & GO GUIDELINES 3. Alcohol, water, oil, foam or any water- or alcohol-based products with no adhesive or glue qualities or artificial colorings are permitted. These products include conditioners and commonly used sprays such as Kleen Sheen, Revive, Final Bloom and white show foam. Paint will be allowed on the hooves and dewclaws only H/FFA beef blocking chutes, which will require a permit, will be limited and there will be a designated area for these blocking chutes.

BLOW & GO GUIDELINES Ultimately… Exhibitors can still clip, wash, and blow their animals Only oil or water-based products can be applied No adhesives or paints Chute numbers will be limited from previous years Hope to give exhibitors more space to operate within the stall
