You’re Hired: How to Find Your Ideal Job March 31, 2009

Agenda Preparation The Search The Interviews Final Decision Making

Your resume is the critical first step … On college resumes we look for:  School information  GPA overall & within major  Classes taken  Work and school  Global experiences  Academic research, projects  Internships  Extracurricular activities  Leadership positions  Awards

Resume Tips Does your resume clearly position you as someone with strengths who can help a company? Does your resume outline your educational strengths? –School –Major –Overall GPA, GPA in your major –Coursework completed –Anticipated graduation date –Major classroom projects Does your resume contain specifics? –No: “contributed to product design.” –Yes: “Conducted market analysis for (name of product) to determine design and mechanics. Led changes to original design spec. despite initial developer objections. Received critical acclaim and sold over 4 million units.”

Resume Tips (cont) Have you outlined achievements as well as responsibilities? –Not just what was accomplished –What was YOUR role Basics –Length of resume? –Are there typos? –Is the resume easy to read? –Working while going to school? –Have you listed irrelevant information? –Is your formatting easy for resume systems (no pictures)? –Consider adding “US Citizen” or “US Permanent Resident” –Use “Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)” –Bi-lingual? Put this on resume!

Good GPA in major – indicates discipline, drive to achieve results, focus Review for relevant coursework Indicates drive to excel and be challenged even in HS Leadership and Coaching experience Coaching and Mentoring experience, potential presentation and communication skills, developing top talent Balanced work and school – indicates flexibility, drive for results, Award indicates customer focus More coaching and mentoring experience, building relationships Driven to achieve, manages execution

Agenda Preparation The Search The Interviews Final Decision Making

The Search: How to Use Career Fairs Prepare your strategy –Review your map –Review majors, etc Get to career fair early! –You & recruiters are refreshed –Opportunity for onsite interviews –Cover more companies Talk to the “right people” Take notes for follow up Network at all events (it’s all about networks!)

The Search: Other Ideas Your professors have contacts Your career center Where did your classmates intern? Your university alumni groups Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (in targeted city) Connections through your family, friends SHPE chapters (in targeted city) Awarding winning companies –Example: Top 50 Companies for Hispanics, Fortune 100, etc

The Search: Communication Communication is a KEY TO SUCCESS Be positive and proactive Have a 30 second commercial Response time is CRITICAL Do NOT play “hard to get” Companies look for: –Strong written and verbal communication skills –How will you interact with their customers? –How will you interact with your teammates? –Will you be a leader?

Agenda Preparation The Search The Interviews Final Decision Making

The Interview Schedule the interview –Don’t let someone catch you between classes for phone interview Prepare for the interview –Research the company and job –Recruiter can help you with job expectations –Did classmates intern there? Get their insight –Hispanic Affinity Group? Get their insight Get name, of who you talk to Follow up with a thank you note If you get an offer, let your target company know!

Agenda Preparation The Search The Interviews Final Decision Making

Final Decision Making What are your options? Company’s Intern Program –Do you get a “real job” –Do they develop you –Compensation –Relocation, Profit Sharing, etc Does the position align with your passion/education? Will this help prepare you? Could this be a long term match? For internships: it is about OPPORTUNITY, it is not about MONEY
