Plants and Animals Plants and animals are made up of millions and millions of tiny parts called cells © LoveLearning 2014
Cells A cell is a tiny part of a living thing that can carry out all the processes of life – Ex. Humans and trees are both made of cells Cells take in nutrients and get rid of wastes andgenetics/cells/ andgenetics/cells/ Cells are too small to be seen without a microscope © LoveLearning 2014
What is this called?
Plant Cell Think of a boiled egg… – Cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm (missing chloroplasts) – ms/jams/science/plants/plant-cells.htm ms/jams/science/plants/plant-cells.htm © LoveLearning 2014
Animal Cells Animal cells do NOT have cell walls – This is an advantage – why do you think? – Without cell walls, animal cells can take on different shapes Ex. Nerve cells, muscle cells, blood cells – Different kinds of cells have allowed animals to develop muscles, bones, and nerves This gives animals the ability to move from place to place (unlike plants) /animals/animal-cells.htm /animals/animal-cells.htm
Animal Cells Animal cells do NOT have chloroplasts – Animals cannot produce their own food – They eat plants, animals, or both Animal cells are smaller than plant cells – Need a microscope to see both – p.com/science/cellu larlifeandgenetics/c ellstructures/ p.com/science/cellu larlifeandgenetics/c ellstructures/ © LoveLearning 2014
Animal and Plant Cells Both animal and plant cells have many other parts (organelles) – Some help store and digest food – Others get rid of wastes – Some help the plant and animal grow – Others pass genes from cell to offspring Plant and animal cells are like factories – © LoveLearning 2014
