 Curriculum overview for Primary 6 and 7  Resources  Questions

 Identify ways in which people grow and change at puberty  Identify the sexual organs of the human body  Recognise the importance of friendship and respect in relationships  Find out about sexual relationships, sexual intercourse and the human life cycle

 Three programmes from the Channel 4 series ‘Living and Growing’ will be viewed with the children.  ‘Changes’ explores the physical and emotional changes which take place at puberty.  ‘How a baby is made’ examines the process of life cycles and reproduction.

 ‘How babies are born’ follows a mum expecting her baby and giving birth.  Keeping Myself Safe is a personal safety programme. The aim of this is to alert children to the danger of strangers or others and provide them with the skills for preventing abduction and sexual abuse.

 Become more aware of their bodies developing sexuality  Find out more about the changes that take place during puberty  Identify different types of relationships  Think again about human reproduction  Recognise the influence of the media

 Three programmes from the BBC Interactive ‘Growing Up’ are viewed at this time.  ‘What’s happening to me?’ recaps on work covered in primary 6. Puberty, how life begins and birth. It explores understanding and coping with physical changes during puberty of both sexes, the reasons for these changes and looking after myself and keeping myself healthy. It also explores sexual reproduction, birth and caring for babies.

 ‘How am I behaving?’ explores understanding moods during puberty, learning to cope with changes in relationships and communication with others.  ‘How are others behaving?’ examines looking after myself and communication in relationships and the influences of the media.  ‘Keeping Myself Safe’ is revisited in Primary 7 to provide children with the skills to be able to keep themselves safe.
