Presentation transcript:

Matter: Anything that has mass and takes up space

Element: Simplest form of a substance made up of a single type of atom Cannot be broken down by chemical means

Compound: Two or more elements chemically combined, forming a new substance with new properties CO 2, H 2 O, C 6 H 12 O 6, H 2 O 2

Mixture: Two or more substances physically combined; can be physically separated. Ratio of components can vary.

Homogeneous Mixture: Sometimes called a “solution” Has a uniform composition Gatorade, tea, black coffee, salt water Air, brass, stainless steel

Heterogeneous Mixture: Composition is varied. Components are often visible. Vegetable soup, trail mix, junk drawer
