Late Romantic

Late Romantic Era Johannes Brahms Born in Germany in 1833 died in Vienna at age 64. His father was a bass player and his mother was a seamstress. He had many famous musical connections such as Franz Liszt and the composer Schumann. He moved to Vienna where he started to compose in greater amounts. He was a handsome young man though in his later years he became untidy and overweight with a very ragged beard. He never married, though, when the composer Schumann died he took a liking to his widow, Clara. He was an abrupt character, who always spoke his mind. Wrote the famous lullaby song Waltz and Hungarian Dance.

Late Romantic Era Camille Saint-Saëns Born in Paris, France in 1835 died in 1921 at age 86. As a small boy, he was destined to become another Mozart. He could play the piano at age 2 and composing at 3! He was an amateur scientist, archaeologist, essayist, poet, and playwright. Some people said he was cursed with the ability to compose too quickly. When he was 40 he married a 19 year old named Marie. They had 2 children together. He didn’t have time for a family life, so he left without warning and never saw Marie again. He is most famous for a composition which he never intended to be heard in public, Carnival of the Animals. This composition shows that he had a sense of humor.
