Inner Core Outer Core Mantle Crust 2

 The Earth's outermost surface is called the crust. The crust is typically about 25 miles thick beneath continents, and about 6.5 miles thick beneath oceans. The crust is relatively light and brittle. Most earthquakes occur within the crust. The crust in this image is much smaller in the real earth! 3 Is made up of the Crust and the Moho. is the dividing line between the Crust and the Mantle.

 Brittle, rocky outer layer of the Earth (5-40 km thick)  There are two major types of crust:  Continental Crust- thicker (30-40 km thick; 60 km in some mountain ranges), granitic (sialic) composition  Oceanic Crust - thinner (about 5 km), basaltic (mafic) composition 4

 The region just below the crust and extending all the way down to the Earth's core is called the mantle. The mantle is relatively flexible so it flows instead of fracturing. 5 is the outer layer of the mantle.

 Solid rocky layer, dense, high pressure. A solid that flows. (2885 km thick)  Separated into the upper and lower mantle.  Composition: peridotite (Mg Fe silicates like olivine), kimberlite (diamonds), eclogite.  This is where most of the internal heat of the Earth is located.  The temperature of the mantle is calculated to be about 870 degrees Celsius. 6

 Beneath the mantle is the Earth's core. The Earth's core consists of a fluid (liquid) outer core and a solid inner core. Because the outer core contains iron, when it flows it generates a magnetic field. This is the source of the Earth's magnetic field. 7

 The outer core is 2300 km thick and the inner core is 1200 km thick.  The outer core is composed mainly of molten iron with some nickel.  The temperature of the outer core ranges from about 4,400 degrees Celsius to about 6,100 degrees Celsius. 8

 The inner core is almost entirely composed of solid iron with some nickel.  The temperature of the inner core of the Earth is estimated to be about 7000 degrees Celsius. 9
