Layers of Earth Eric Angat Teacher

Essential Question How do I describe the layers of Earth?

Layers of Earth 1.What are the two types of crust? 2. Write the thickness of the following Earth layers. A. Continental crust: _____________miles B. Oceanic crust: ________________miles C. Mantle: _____________________miles D. Outer core: __________________miles E. Inner core: ___________________miles

Crust: 3-25 miles Mantle: 1800 miles Outer core: 1400 miles Inner core: 800 miles

3.Based on the following depths, what is the closest estimate of Earth’s diameter? Think! Crust: 3-25 miles Mantle: 1800 miles Outer core: 1400 miles Inner core: 800 miles Earth’s Radius: 4,025 miles

Radius, Diameter and Circumference. TheRadius is the distance from the center outwards. The Diameter goes straight across the circle, through the center. The Circumference is the distance once around the circle. Earth’s Radius: 4,025 miles Earth’s Radius ( estimate): 8,050 miles

7,565 miles 7,926 miles Earth’s shape is an oblate spheroid. It is bulging at the equator Earth’s diameter is about 8,000 miles

4. Describe the layers of Earth. A. Continental crust: _____________ B. Oceanic crust ________________ C. Mantle: _____________________ D. Outer core: __________________ E. Inner core: ___________________

Continental crust : Made mostly of lighter Granitic rocks. Oceanic crust : Made mostly of heavier Basaltic rocks. Mantle: Thickest layer. Convection currents in this layer results to plate tectonic movements. Outer Core: The only liquid layer. Made up of iron and nickel. Convection current in this layer produces Earth’s magnetic field. Inner Core: The densest layer. Solid iron and nickel that spins faster than Earth itself.

4. Describe the layers of Earth. a.Thickest layer. Convection currents in this layer result to plate movements b.Made mostly of heavier Basaltic rocks. c. Made mostly of lighter Granitic rocks. d. The densest layer. Solid iron and nickel that spins faster than Earth itself. e. The only liquid layer. Made up of iron and nickel. Convection current in this layer produces Earth’s magnetic field.

Van Allen radiation belt The Van Allen radiation belts contained within Earth’s magnetosphere. Pressure from the solar wind is responsible for the asymmetrical shape of the magnetosphere and the belts.

Van Allen radiation belts are doughnut- shaped zones of highly energetic charged particles trapped at high altitudes in the magnetic field of Earth. The zones were named for James A. Van Allen, the American physicist who discovered them in 1958, using data transmitted by the U.S. Explorer satellite.magnetic fieldEarthJames A. Van AllenExplorer

5. Without Earth’s magnetic field… A. Compasses would not work B. Solar winds would strip away ozone from the atmosphere. C. Life would be exposed to ultraviolet radiation D. All of the above

6. What generates Earth’s magnetic field? A. Convection in the atmosphere. B. A giant bar magnet inside the planet. C. Convection in the liquid outer core D. Solar wind.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN THE EARTH’S MAGNETIC FIELD SWITCHES OR COLLAPSES April 17, 2014April 17, 2014 Melissa 3 commentsMelissa3 comments Jesse asks: What will happen when the earth’s magnetic field switches? The Earth’s magnetic field protects life on Earth, shielding it from damaging radiation and moderating our climate. So the idea that it could completely flip around, or collapse altogether, should cause us to worry, right? Well, yes and no.

1. Name the four layers of the Earth in order from the outside to the center of the Earth. 2. What causes the mantle to "flow"? 3. What are the two main metals that make up the outer and inner core? 4. Describe in your own words how the Earth's layers were formed. "The Four Layers" will help you.
