Dewey in Italy The Role of the National Central Library of Florence Laura Crociani – Maria Chiara Giunti – Elisabetta Viti EDUG Naples 2015

The beginning in the early 1950s 1886: the National Central Library of Florence took on the role of national bibliographic agency 1958: the new Italian National Bibliography was published, arranged according to the main classes of the Dewey Decimal Classification

BNI arranged by 15 th DDC and 16 th ed. 1958: records classified with the 15th edition, using mainly three digits : records classified with the 16th edition, using mainly three digits

: the ”BNI tables” named ”tavolette” by Luigi Crocetti 1961: the editorial team of the National Bibliography standardized the headings, according to each number. First self published edition of the “Schema” or “Tables” of these classes (based on the 16th DDC) 1970: second edition (based on the 17 th DDC 1977: third edition (based on the 18 th DDC)

BNI years and DDC editions in the first period BNI th ed. (unpublished) BNI th ed. (1961 published) BNI th ed. (1970 published) BNI th ed. (1977 published)

Two famous directors of BNI and of BNCF Emanuele Casamassima, director of the Italian National Bibliography Diego Maltese, director of the Italian National Bibliography Emanuele Casamassima, director of the National Central Library of Florence Diego Maltese, director of the National Central Library of Florence

Innovation! : the beginning of the National Library Service (SBN) The National Central Library of Florence first centre of the National Library Service, with that of Ravenna Italian National Bibliography begins to apply the full system of Dewey Decimal Classification

BNI applies full DDC italian editions th Italian edition DDC st Italian edition nd Italian edition Present 23rd Italian WebDewey edition

The second phase of innovation Clearness - Brevity - Good use of the language! 2000 and 2009 Luigi Crocetti 2000 and 2009: the 21 st and 22 nd Italian editions were translated and published by the same editing team from the Italian National Bibliography, with the special contribution of Luigi Crocetti

Rome 2000

A third phase begins now : Italian National Bibliography applies the WebDewey Italian edition, and its semantic cataloguers offer scientific advice to the external translation team

The on-line classified catalogue of the Central National Library of Florence the BNI classifiers had two goals: To use the full edition of Dewey Classification To construct a classified catalogue in the new National Library Service, based on the current full edition in that time and later In SBN with Dewey:

The other side of the moon: using Dewey in the Opac : a 30 year history The criteria that were defined at the time, with regard to the structure of an on-line archive of classes stood the test of time, even if with subsequent adjustments, with respect both to the growth of the Library database, and also the succession of the various editions of the Dewey Classification

From the Dewey numbers to the documents Pre-coordinated archive of Dewey classes as framework for the on-line classified catalogue Our on-line catalogue allows for research based on the Dewey Classification, both by numbers and keywords from the captions of the numbers. A filter by editions is also available.

Dewey Browser of BNCF navigatore Dewey

Browsing the classes, divisions, sections...

Software's evolution for various editions New various editions have required the evolution of the software for the on-line classified archive, with different solutions in time, from 19 th edition to 23 rd edition. Records classified with each edition have a different flag in the data base, so it's possible to choose through a specific filter in the Opac.

Searching into the different editions

Mapping from the Nuovo soggettario universal Thesaurus to DDC equivalents including with WebDewey The DDC notation represent the interdisciplinary or comprehensive number
