REDUCING WASTE TO ZERO James Copperwait – Managing Director Focus Environmental and Focus Recycling

Contents  Background  Making Recycling Work  Working with WRAP & PTZW  Case study  Challenges  Moving forward  Discussion

Background  Focus Environmental Established in April 2007  Bespoke Construction Recycling Packages  Predominantly London & South East of England  Projects ranging from £5m - £200m All Sectors  Focus Recycling Established in 2009  Developing Recycling Experience to C&I Industries

Making Recycling Work  Work with Industry at Planning Stage – SWMP  Simple Strategy – Think Recycling from the Start  Ensure all Stakeholders ‘Buy In’ to Recycle  K.I.S – Simple, Effective Solutions will be remembered  Ownership – Someone needs to take Control  Plan, Target, Manage, Record & Move Forward

Our Approach is Very Simple Plan and Manage Site Waste & Recycling Minimise, Separate and Recycle at Source Keep Sites Safe as well as Key planning = successful project

Recycling saves you money... Safety is key – Improve Housekeeping Good Recycling Improves CSR profile We strive to stay ahead of changing legislation Landfill is no longer a viable method

On-Site Segregation  Encouraged from the start of development  Encourage all Stakeholders to Minimise Waste On-Site Minimisation  Plasterboard, Timber, Cardboard & Plastic Packaging, Metal, and Inert – Cheaper….  Mixed skips – difficult to analyse and proven more expensive

The Landmark, E14  £160m residential  800 flats, 103 floors, 4 blocks  City centre project – limited space  70% segregated on site – 100% recycled  30% to MRF – 80% recycled  Total waste recycled – 94%

Focus Recycling Total waste volume 2009/10 – Focus Environmental Services  On 100% of our sites we recycle something

Breakdown of Focus / Construction Waste

Challenges ‘Old school mindsets’ Resistance to Change or be ‘Told’ what to do Space limitations on site Difficult end markets for Recycled products Resistance from manufacturers & Suppliers

Pathway to Zero Waste & WRAP  Signed up to Halving Waste to Landfill in 2009  In line with our Company Ethos  We believe Waste is a Resource  We are striving to send ZERO Waste to Landfill  Triple Bottom Line; Environmental, Economic and Social benefits  PTZW Supporting Focus Recycling Project

Moving Forward Audit & Record Accurately Set targets Supply chain engagement Transparent reporting

What Are We Doing? Formation of Focus Recycling Consolidation Centre Focusing on problematic materials: - Plasterboard and gypsum - Timber - Packaging & Plastics Our own recycling facility 1. Strengthens our business and therefore service efficiency 2. Additional benefits like community engagement
