My Race For The Cure by Teacher Angy

1. It’s October Angy finds a lump in her left breast.

2. She makes an appointment with her doctor.

3. Her doctor tells her to have a mammogram and an ultrasound of the lump.

4. After the ultrasound, a doctor does a biopsy of the lump to test it for cancer.

5. The test is positive. It is cancer.

6. The surgeon tells Angy “Good for you. You found it early and didn't wait to come in.”

7. It’s November Angy has surgery to remove the cancer.

8. It’s January Angy starts Chemotherapy.

9. Chemo kills cancer cells.

10. It kills some normal cells too and this can make you feel sick.

11. Chemo makes her vomit.

12. She feels tired and nauseous.

13. Sometimes she has a fever.

14. Chemo gives her a rash on her hands.

15. Chemo makes her hair fall out. Angy wears a wig or hats to teach English class.

16. Her hair is going to grow back.

17. It’s May Angy starts radiation treatments.

18. It’s July She’s going to take a pill, Tamoxafen to keep the cancer from coming back.

19. Many women have breast cancer. 1 woman in every 8 women in the United States.

20. Most survive cancer because they find it early and treat it.

Suggested activities for the classroom: Have students listen and repeat the story. Students circle key vocabulary from the story. Students alphabetize 10 to 15 key words.
