Question

How to answer THINK! Note down points – as list or mindmap Add quotations to your points: choose quotations that you can analyse Plan the order in which you will write about your points Start writing – As you write, review: is every paragraph PEE? Have I made my point clearly? Does my point answer the question? SPaG (AO4)?

Find five points to answer the question 1.N first intro with S as ‘fierce-looking’ and ‘not much of a talker, but with a reputation for getting his own way.’

A PEE paragraph From early in the novel, it is clear that Napoleon is a character for whom power is important. When Napoleon is first introduced, in the second paragraph of the Chapter 2, Orwell’s description of him draws attention to the fact that he is ‘fierce-looking’ and that he has a ‘reputation for getting his own way’. Orwell also tells us that he ‘was not much of a talker’, implying that if Napoleon is someone who gets ‘his own way’ it is not through verbal persuasion but through his ‘fierce’ nature, suggesting that he may use aggression and violence to get what he wants. The fact that Napoleon is introduced at the same time as Snowball and they are both described as ‘two young boars’ who are ‘Pre-eminent among the pigs’ but are quite different in character, the contrast between their facilities with speech emphasised in that Snowball is ‘quicker in speech’ than Napoleon. This contrast between the two who have equal status at the beginning foreshadows the power struggle that will occur later in the novel.
