Today’s workshop Who we are What we do How we use social media Benefits so far Asset mapping Using Twitter Having a go!

About the ALLIANCE The ALLIANCE’s vision is for a Scotland where people of all ages who are disabled or living with long term conditions, and unpaid carers, have a strong voice and enjoy their right to live well, as equal and active citizens, free from discrimination, with support and services that put them at the centre. Over 260 members. Membership spans long term conditions, mental health, disability and unpaid carers. Many public and private sector associates. Strategic partner and critical friend of Scottish Government.

What the ALLIANCE does History of partnership, innovative programme development/delivery, with voice of people at its heart Provides a voice for users of health and social care services (many of whom are the 2 million people who live with long term conditions in Scotland). Works as a conduit between people and decision makers.

What the ALLIANCE does Supports membership to network and share good practice, practical support through Hub and meeting rooms. Active in policy and public affairs in areas ranging from employability to Health and Social Care integration and Welfare Reform. Manages £2 million per year Self Management Impact Fund. Campaigns to raise awareness of self management agenda.

What the ALLIANCE does Many partnership projects with people’s voices at the centre, e.g. ALISS ( Access to Local Information to Support Self Management). Walking Towards Better Health.

Many partnership projects with people’s voices at the centre, e.g. My Skills, My Strengths, My Right to Work’ Improving Links to Primary Care Dementia Carers Voices project

Social Media: Any web based technology which allows users to easily create and share content – including text, photos and videos – and connect directly with other users to build communities and communicate with each other.

Social Media: We Facebook YouTube

Target Audiences: 1. ALLIANCE Members 2. Health and social care professionals and practitioners 3. Government and policy makers 4. People living with one or more long term conditions and their unpaid carers/families 5. The media

Social Media Aims: Inform Engage Consult Feedback

Examples of how we have used Twitter: Twitter discussions e.g. NHSInform # Hashtags at events Promoting members’ work Building relationships Learning from others Raising awareness Receiving feedback e.g. membership ideas survey

Examples of benefits we've seen so far on Twitter: #hashtags at events to group conversation Twitter chats to engage & receive feedback Increased profile Inform members, associates and people with long term conditions about ALLIANCE work Promote & progress of the #selfmanagement agenda Supporting people by sign posting to valuable resources Raised awareness of campaigns, projects, events, conferences etc. Organisations retweeting our key messages, links to our/members campaigns, reports, dates of events etc. Our tweets leading to articles in followers/organisations bulletins, publications etc.

Community Asset Mapping on Twitter with the ALISS project: Community asset mapping is a method that seeks to discover and utilize the strengths within a community. The ALISS project helps people to think about what keeps them well within their community, map these out (literally) and think about how we could signpost to these within existing services or design new services. We then collect theses community assets/resources and add them to the ALISS ENGINE - online tool helps people find sources of LOCAL support in Scotland - a national local index of assets.

Discussion 10 minutes: What keeps you well? What's good about your community?
