BLM System R2E and Availability Workshop, B.Dehning 1 Bernd Dehning CERN BE-BI

Dose at BLM Tunnel Locations BLM front-end electronics qualified up to 500 Gy Assumed limit of life given by optical LASER diode BLM R2E changes not needed before LS3 But R2E and Availability Workshop, B.Dehning 2

System overview R2E and Availability Workshop, B.Dehning Tunnel front-end Custom crate below MQ Custom crate in RR, UA and UJ Surface back-end VME crates in SR and SX buildings

System overview R2E and Availability Workshop, B.Dehning New cabling for the monitors in the collimation region (NE18, NES18, CB and CBH50)

System overview R2E and Availability Workshop, B.Dehning New back-end electronics (threshold comparator) under development to overcome reliability limitations and increase FPGA size

System overview R2E and Availability Workshop, B.Dehning Change of thresholds - noise signal levels and operational efficiency may require to reduce the cable length Development of new radiation tolerant front-end

Motivation for Foreseen Changes on BLM System Noise on cables is checked in regular intervals Goal: maximum noise signal a factor 10 below the threshold for the particular channel Exchange of single shielded cables (NE18) with double shielded cables (NES18) done for critical locations (mainly long cables) R2E and Availability Workshop, B.Dehning 7 New radiation tolerant front-end (ASICs) located near to detectors

New System Layout for BLM front-end BLM ASIC improved current to frequency converter in ASIC (PhD thesis) GBTX ASIC transceiver acts as an interface between the front-end electronics and the optical link 4.8 Gb/s optical link with optional forward error correction or 8b10b encoding Qualification up to 1 MGy Versatile Transceiver and Transmitter (VTRx) Qualification up to 10 kGy, components selected for a dose up to 0.5 MGy R2E and Availability Workshop, B.Dehning 8

Radiation Tolerant ASIC Development aa R2E and Availability Workshop, B.Dehning 9

Radiation testing of the BLM ASIC R2E and Availability Workshop, B.Dehning 10

Summary For run 2 and 3 no global changes are budgeted yet, but developments ongoing for: New front-end with high radiation tolerance New back-end with large FPGA Radiation damage on cables and detectors needs to be monitored R2E and Availability Workshop, B.Dehning 11

The two ASICS on the module are qualified for 1MGy, the limiting factor are the Laser diode and the Photodiode) Price: SFP 35e?, LASER 90 e R2E and Availability Workshop, B.Dehning 12
