Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme Who are we? Public Health Wales 4 Topic Focussed Networks Physical Activity Nutrition Sexual Health Mental Health Promotion

Who are we for? Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme Practitioners in Wales Health Workers Community Workers Public Sector Agencies Private Sector Planners Youth workers Teachers Local Authority Officers Voluntary Sector Project Staff And……

Aim Develop a Welsh knowledge base and infrastructure in order to implement and strengthen strategies and actions that improve mental health, nutritional health, sexual health and physical activity in Wales. Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme

Objectives To identify and signpost ‘good practice’ initiatives in the relevant topic areas in Wales. To identify and signpost ‘good practice’ elements within initiatives in Wales. To establish a national quality mark for good practice in Wales. To establish a system that identifies and addresses the development needs of health promotion & health improvement initiatives in the relevant topic areas in Wales. Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme

Why Good Practice? 1.To share learning. 2.To promote ‘evidence based’ practice. 3.To reduce duplication (of mistakes). 4.To encourage duplication (of good practice). 5.To showcase & reward excellence. 6.Members asked for it. Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme

How did we define ‘Good’ Practice? Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme Literature searches. Input from academics. Meetings with other agencies. Discussions with practitioners. Limited field with wide variability from: “Give us a call and we’ll add it to the list” to ‘Peer reviewed Randomised Controlled Trials only’.

The Good Practice Project 18 months work. PH networks’ team with support from network advisory boards. Development of systematic Structure, Process & Criteria. Establishment of Good Practice Assessment Panel. Intern from Maastricht University. Piloting of 7 projects & programmes with criteria. Refinement of criteria & establishment of guidance and system. Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme

Tensions Balancing research rigour with practicality in the field. Non judgmental – Problems with hierarchical criteria. Engaging research community without alienating practitioners (and vice versa). Establishing an ‘objective’ system with ‘subjective’ flexibility. Being clear about the purpose Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme

The Structure Developing Practice – Initiatives that have not had the time or opportunity to fully develop all the identified elements or stages. Promising Practice – Initiatives that have addressed many or most of the identified criteria associated with project development, but have not addressed all the identified criteria. (It is recognised that many initiatives may never be able to address all the identified criteria through no fault of their own.) Good Practice – Initiatives that have addressed all the identified criteria, with supporting evidence (portfolio) to the satisfaction of the Assessment Panel. Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme

The Process Initiatives submitted to appropriate network using the ‘Good Practice’ questionnaire (Online or hard copy). Initial assessment by network co-ordinator to identify provisional stage of project. Network co-ordinator will contact applicant to identify needs, gaps etc. and to gather initial evidence for portfolio (project outline, needs assessments etc.). Co-ordinators will help identify support needs and signpost accordingly. When all criteria met, initiative submitted to quarterly Assessment Panel with portfolio for consideration. Successful submissions awarded Quality Mark of Good Practice. Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme

The Portfolio Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme An electronic file of supporting documentation. i.e. Evidence. e.g. Evaluation reports, needs assessments, PID’s, project proposals, photos, feedback forms, minutes of meetings etc. NOT extra paperwork!

Assessment Panel Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme Core Panel: Prof Sir Mansel Aylward Prof Gareth Williams Dr Chris Roberts (WAG) Dinah Roberts (PHW) Malcolm Ward (PHW) Topic Specialists: From Network Advisory Boards.

Good Practice Quality Mark – The Award All initiatives completing the criteria and endorsed by the assessment panel will receive the All Wales National Quality Mark. This will include: Certificate of Achievement. Indicator on searchable web database. Specific promotion of the initiative through the appropriate website & newsletter. Invitation to Awards Ceremony. Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme

Completing the Jigsaw Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme

Good Practice Elements In recognition of the fact that initiatives may contain elements of good practice from which others can learn, there will be a system that recognises this. This will identify those elements with a separate indicator using the pieces of the jigsaw that make up the whole initiative. So, for example, an initiative that satisfactorily completes the ‘Planning‘ stage will be identified on the database with a single jigsaw piece. One that completes 2 stages will have 2 pieces etc. (Irrespective of ‘stage’) Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme

Why Bother? To share learning. To increase profile. To improve practice. To access additional support. To enhance future funding bids. To have achievements recognised. Public Health Wales Good Practice Scheme
