MICE Construction Project Update: SSs, PRY, Cavities, Tracker… 1MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

Outline Spectrometer Solenoids Magnetic mitigation Status of Step IV PRY Cooling step configuration & performance MICE Step V’ (Cooling Demo) & RF Modules – 2 needed for the final MICE step – Status and outlook 2MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

Remembering MICE 3MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

Step IV 4MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

Spectrometer Solenoids A successful end to a Long Saga 5 Both SSs passed all qualification tests at the vendor, were fully mapped and shipped to RAL. Now installed in hall First team visit to prep SSs for first cool down in MICE hall occurred in October March MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

MICE Tracker 6MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross Both trackers are installed Debug of readout system is ongoing – Full system test was done and was very successful, but this was done outside the hall – Now working through issues in the hall Grounding Noise Etc.

Other Detectors CKOV TOF0, TOF1 and TOF2 KL EMR Are all working and have been for some time. 7MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

Step IV Partial Return Yoke Framework (N&S) is complete One set of framework at shipper South Wall (4”) steel complete ~2/27 Full job complete by 3/3 8 Center sections (independent removal) MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

Steel B/H curves from melt in good agreement with JFE-EFE generic curve (no effect on PRY performance) Additional measurements being done by KJS in the US to verify JFE numbers – Two heats: one for 2” and one for 4” steel 9 2” steel Log(H(kA/m)) MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

Framework 10MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

QC Tests at Keller North and South Frame assemblies were fully QC’d (laser surveyed) to verify that they are in tolerance and identical to within manufacturing tolerance. One set has been packaged and is in the process of being air freighted to RAL so that PRY frame fit- up/survey in hall can begin – Both North and South This should guarantee straightforward assembly of the South and North walls once the steel plate arrives The second set will be used to do a full assembly test at Keller of the South and North PRY walls once steel plate is ready. 11MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

PRY Installation 12MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

PRY Installation II 13MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

Cooling Demo aka Step V’ 14MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

RF Modules 15MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

RF module design variations 4 Extra ports to access the coupler/cavity interface Port will look in from above and below on the coupler to cavity joint

Original RFM Vacuum Design Conductance between the two vacuum volumes –Exterior vacuum spoils the interior vacuum –Annular clearance has very large conductance –Instead pump on only the cavity with getter pump, use roughing system for exterior vacuum 17

New RFM Vacuum Design 18 Bellows welded to flange, then clamped to MICE RF cavity Bellows welded to CF flange Welds

New RFM Vacuum Design 19 Getter pump Bypass Line Burst Disk Line Roughing valve

Note on RF Tuners We did have some problems with the RF tuners. One developed a leak and we ran with 5. New design complete – Simpler, more robust & more compact. – Prototype to be made and tested – Then full production of 2 new full sets (12) plus spares 20MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

PRY for Cooling Demo

Step V’ PRY 22MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross ~3m

PRY extension – Option 23MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

PRY Extension for Cooling Demo There are no engineering issues w/r to the mods needed for the PRY for final step. Will use JFE-EFE steel and order as soon as possible after delivery of the 4” steel to Keller – Raw plate specification for extension underway now. Wall extension straightforward extrapolation from Step IV design Need for “Top-Hat” will depend on final vacuum design and performance for RF modules 24MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

RF Implementation

26 Output line from amplifier is lower than the PRY, needs to go high to clear PRY to couple to South RF couplers Already have the 6” coax to go over the wall No advantage in going through the wall Flexible coax Line Trimmers Hybrid Splitter Directional Coupler in each line 4616 Pre Amplifier TH116 Amplifier 500kw Dummy Load Directional Coupler 6 inch

27 2 nd TH116 amplifier moved to 3 rd position behind wall to use the space and ease installation in congested area Sufficient space on wall for additional identical water services panel……John Govans would like to modify existing panel.

28 Some clashes with existing vacuum shield current scheme. Hybrids splitters can move upstream & downstream to avoid clash, achieved by setting correct rotation angles on coax lines Suggest mounting coax supports off PRY steel work…….need to liaise with Jason & Steve Plate

LiH absorber(s) The LiH (main) absorber for Step IV has arrived in the UK – Disk 45 cm in diameter and 6.5 cm thick Secondary LiH absorbers to shield trackers are under investigation – Y12 has been contacted and they claim that they can provide these – Waiting for cost and schedule estimates from them 29MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross

Conclusions Spectrometer solenoids are complete and installed N & S PRY frames complete PRY for Step IV making excellent progress PRY extension has no significant engineering issues RF modules will be almost identical to SCTS currently under test in MTA. Again, presents no significant engineering challenges – Assuming no unexpected results in B field tests RF implementation/design on-going Both are well ahead of the critical path at this point. 30MAP Friday Meeting – January 30, 2015 Alan Bross
