Hempcrete is an insulation material made of hemp shiv mixed with a lime based binder. With low embodied energy and low energy in use, hempcrete offers a genuinely low carbon contribution to sustainable construction. Hempcrete is carbon negative. A 300mm hempcrete wall absorbs in its construction 40kg of CO2 per m2. A typical brick and block wall emits 100kg giving a net benefit of 140kg.

Hemp is grown and processed in East Anglia Hemp is grown and processed in East Anglia. Hemp requires no fertilisers or irrigation and is the second fastest growing plant. Hemp shiv is produced in the processing of hemp fibre which is widely used in rope, clothing, car interiors etc. Hempcrete is fireproof, waterproof and resistant to insects, rodents and rotting. The expected life of a hempcrete building is in excess of 100 years. At the end of its life the hempcrete can be broken down and mixed into new hempcrete. 1% of UK farmland could produce the hemp required to for all new houses built in the UK each year - Prof. Tom Woolley

The combination of thermal inertia, thermal conductivity and airtightness gives fantastic insulation performance. Hempcrete buildings use less energy to heat and cool than other buildings with the same U value – 0.2 at 300mm thick. Achieves airtightness values better than two air changes an hour. Hempcrete is vapour permeable, regulating humidity as well as temperature, making a hempcrete home an extremely comfortable and healthy place to live. Hempcrete is crack resistant and requires no expansion joints.

The social housing pictured cost £900 p/m2 to build; less than conventional building methods. The homes achieved Energy Performance Certificate B. Research by the University of Cambridge Judge Business School in 2011 showed that most developers' customers, housing associations and individuals are willing to pay a sustainability price premium of 10%. Time scales achievable for on site construction: Month 1 – Foundations, floors, timber frame. Month 2 – Roof, hempcrete walls. Month 3 – Internal fit out. Month 4 – Render and completion.

Hempcrete is also ideally suited to insulate and repair listed buildings. Conventional insulation: Dub out walls, apply insulating fibre board using adhesive, tape and vapour barriers. Two costs of lime plaster. £120 p/m2 Our solution: Spray apply 100mm hempcrete. One coat fibre lime plaster. £94 p/m2
