GIS in the classroom Alan Kinder Barking & Dagenham School Improvement Service

What is a GIS? A Geographical Information System A combination of a map with data (photos, notes, numbers etc.) Requires software to store/run

What can GIS do for me? Emergency vehicle planning Local authority spending Mapping and predicting crime Deciding supermarket location Delivering pizzas!

What can GIS do for me (2)? Draw & interpret maps Teach and practise map skills Explore and compare places Establish a ‘sense of place’ Research & display information Make predictions and decisions

GIS in your classroom How could you make use of this technology? What can your learners already do?

Getting started Use something free Use something simple i.e. in terms of software and training requirements Use other peoples’ resources first Develop your resources second Put the responsibility onto pupils quickly

Developing use of GIS How does this software promote Geographical learning? Where will it fit with our current curriculum? Will it change the way we do things in future, or what we do? How can I spread the message?
