DRUGS IN SPORT

Learning Objectives You will learn the difference between socially acceptable and socially unacceptable drugs. You will learn about drugs and the sportsperson.

Drugs Drugs are chemicals consumed, inhaled or injected into the body. Some drugs are accepted in society, some have an age restraint on their use and others are illegal. Each drug affects the body in a different way. Some are addictive. Some have side effects and long term health risks.

 Some of these are used on a regular basis by many of us. These are SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE.  CAFFEINE - which we use in tea and coffee.  NICOTINE - which people use in smoking.  ETHANOL - more commonly known as alcohol.  MEDICINES – Legal drugs. Drugs

Drugs They can become addictive. Smoking damages the heart and oxygen carrying capability of the blood. It is also a contributing factor to coronary heart disease. Both alcohol and caffeine cause extra urine to be disposed of, therefore add to the risks of dehydration. Long term effects of alcohol include liver damage.

TASK USE THE INFORMATION ON CIGARETTES AND ALCOHOL FROM PAGE 139 TO SUMMARISE THE EFFECTS THESE PRODUCTS HAVE ON THE BODY.

There are also drugs that come under the term “SOCIALLY UNACCEPTABLE” and these are illegal. This group includes: 1.Heroin 2.Cocaine 3.LSD 4.Amphetamines 5.Barbiturates 6.Cannabis and ecstasy.

Performance Enhancing Drugs. The rewards for winning in sport can be great. This may cause athletes to cheat. Governing bodies have clear drug testing policies. Each sport has its own list of banned substances to make it clear to performers and their coaches. Some drugs are used to hide pain, some to develop the body artificially.

Governing Bodies: The IOC medical commission works to: ‘protect the health of athletes… ensure respect for both medical and sport ethics... enforce equality for all competing athletes.’

IOC GUIDE TO PROHIBITED SUBSTANCES: Use the lists on Page 141 to make three lists in your notes. 1) Prohibited classes 2) Prohibited methods 3) Subject to restriction
