4/15 Agenda - Day 2 1.Intro. annotated bibliography assignment 2.How to effectively take notes as your read an article 3.Night MC Test 4.Practice note taking with Wiesel’s bio 5.Annotate your own!

What is an Annotated Bibliography? An annotated bibliography is a works cited page that includes an annotation: a short paragraph that informs the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. An annotated bibliography typically includes some or all of the following objective information: ●Content (topics included) ●Purpose of the work ●Intended audience ●Authority of the author or source ●Currency of the work ●Useful features (illustrations, maps, references, timelines, glossary, index, multimedia)

Why should I write an Annotated Bibliography? Usually… Writing an annotated bibliography is preparation for a research project. Collecting sources is useful, but when you have to write annotations for each source, you’re forced to read each source more carefully. You begin to read more critically instead of just collecting information. For this assignment… You’re writing an A.B. to Explore unfamiliar topics Extend your understanding of Night Have an excuse to learn something new! Get a basic idea of what goes into an A.B.

Close Reading and Annotating for Summarizing

Annotating is having a conversation with the text as you read. It is personal. It will look different from that of others.

Example Annotations in English are like showing your work in math. It helps me see how you think and understand.

THINK THINK while you read. I infer... I predict… I conclude… I realize… This is word/sentence is important because… I don’t know what this means. (Look it up!) I’m confused by… I wonder if… This reminds me of…

We need a shortcut! It would take a really long time to write all this as we read… So, annotating is shorthand… symbols and notes that represent our thoughts

How do I do it? 1.Read text once without annotating. 2.On the second read… Write in the margins. Make a note of what each paragraph is about. Ask questions. React. Label important ideas. Note the meaning of words (Look them up.) Use arrows to relate different parts of the text. If you highlight, note why you are highlighting.

Night Test During: Focus on your test and doing your best. Be sure to double check your answers and your bubbling! After: Did you check your answers and your bubbling? Turn test and scantron in to the front desk. Make two stacks! Remain quiet and respectful of those still testing. Pick up a copy of Wiesel’s biography and a handout about thoughtful notetaking. Read the bio and mark it up! Focus on summarizing main points. See me when “finished” with annotations.

Homework Begin annotating your articles Next class we will be working on composing the Annotated Bibliography. The AB is due by 11:59 pm on April 19 th ; having your articles found, read, and annotated is crucial if you want to make a timely submission! Your articles will be submitted and annotations checked for a daily grade. Late passes MAY NOT be used on the annotated articles.
