Agenda u Part I – Linking Areas to Prerequisite Checking n SMAPRLE n GTVSDAX n SCACRSE, SCAPREQ n SSASECT, SSAPREQ n SFRPINI u Part II – How to Build an Area n SMAALIB – Area Library n SMAAREA- Area Requirement Form
Part I – Linking Areas to Prerequisite Checking u First: n Create a generic program on SMAPRLE n Insert the program name into GTVSDAX
Part I – Linking Areas to Prerequisite Checking u Second: n Name the requirement in SMAALIB and mark as a prerequisite n Create the requirement in SMAAREA and activate More information on this step in Part II
Part I – Linking Areas to Prerequisite Checking u Third n Check ‘CAPP Areas for Pre-requisites’ on SCAPREQ or SCACRSE, if the pre-requisite(s) applies to all sections. n Attach the area on SCAPREQ, if the pre- requisite(s) applies to all sections
Part I – Linking Areas to Prerequisite Checking u Fourth n Check ‘CAPP Areas for Pre-requisites’ on SSASECT or SSAPREQ, if the pre-requisite(s) applies to a specific section n Attach the area on SSAPREQ, if the pre- requisite(s) applies to a specific section This is not necessary if Step Three was completed before creating the schedule
Setting Up the PIPES u DBMS_PIPES are an Oracle Feature (package). Banner uses this feature for Job Submission. They must be started for prerequisite checking, though. u DBMS_PIPES for CAPP AREA PRE-REQs. Set-up of pipes. n 1. To start the pipes, the DBA must run SFRPINI. n 2. SFRPIPE is the process to start the pipes; it cannot be run alone; it is invoked by SFRPINI.
Setting Up the PIPES (Cont) u SFRPINI will start SFRPIPE for each record in the SFBPIPE table. u The SFBPIPE table was delivered with ten pipes. u You probably will need to change the number of pipes running depending on volume and system capabilities.
Setting Up the PIPES (Cont) u If SFRPINI fails on initial run, try removing the 5 pipes from the SFBPIPE table with the queue length = 4. Then restart the process. u There is additional step by step instructions in the CAPP training materials in Appendix D.
Part II – How to Build an Area u SMAALIB – Area Library Form u SMAAREA – Area Requirements Form n Requirements n Restrictions n Detail n Sets and Subsets n Rules
Area Library Form (SMAALIB) u Required fields: n Code n Description n Student Level n Course Level n Prerequisite Indicator u Used in the place of a validation table
Area Requirements Form (SMAAREA) u General requirements u Area restrictions n Additional course levels to include/exclude n Restricted subjects/attributes n Restricted grades
Area Requirements Form (SMAAREA) (Cont.) u Specific requirements n Subjects n Courses n Student Attributes n Course Attributes n Minimum Grades n Test Scores
Area Requirements Form (SMAAREA) (Cont.) u Specific requirements (cont.) n Use of Transfer Work? n Credits n Start and End Terms n Campus n College n Department
Using Sets and subsets for And/Or u Set n Collection of records u Subset n Division within the set
Principles of sets and subsets u Different - Sets implied “and” condition u Like - Subsets in set implied “and” condition u Unlike - Subsets in set implied “or” condition u Null - Sets/subsets required elements and implied “and” among records with “null” set/subset
Naming Sets & Subsets u Set is a character field n Up to three characters u Subset is a numeric field n Three digits n CAPP inserts leading zeros for empty spaces
Set/Subset Example A student must take: HIST 110, 111, and 114 or ANTH AND PSYC 100 or SOC 110
SET SUBSET SUBJ COURSE # Low - High A HIST A HIST 114 A ANTH Set/Subset Example (Cont.)
SET SUBSET SUBJ COURSE # Low - High A HIST A HIST 114 A ANTH A20111 PSYC100 A20222 SOC110 Set/Subset Example (Cont.)
Using Rules When And/Or Won’t Work u Attachment Rule feature defines the requirements of the group and/or area u “Meet ‘x’ of the following ‘x’ conditions” u Attachment rules add the concept of conditions
And/Or Conditions u Sets and subsets can be used at either level to define ‘and/or’ conditions among rules u After the rule code is defined, define the details of the rule
Conditions u State requirements by conditions u A condition can be: n An individual requirement n Requirements using sets & subsets n Or requirements using a rule-within-a-rule
The “rule umbrella” u Describes the overall rule using the concept of “conditions” u Summary of the rule umbrella data elements needed for Social Science requirements Description: Core Social-Science Component Req# Req Courses/Max CoursesTotal ReqTotal Max Conditions Condition Condition Courses Courses
Define the detail u Each line is treated as a different “condition” by compliance processing u The min and max number of courses were defined in the rule umbrella
Sort priorities u Compliance sorts entries and selects courses n Null entries (without a rule or set and subsets) n Null entries with a rule n Sets sorted alphabetically n Subsets within a set, sorted numerically
