LAV electronics status report Mauro Raggi and Francesco Gonnella TDAQ meeting NA62 Collboration Meeting 1-5 September 2014 Ferrara

Hardware status 3 September 2014Mauro Raggi - Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati2 “15 tonnes slotted into a crevasse with centimeters to spare and set down on target to within 2mm in one fell swoop without breaking a sweat. Man that guy is good!” M. D. Moulson LAV 12 is in place! the construction of the LAV is over everything is in its place

Test stand at CERN Mauro Raggi - Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati3 The LAV front-end electronic test stand has been moved to CERN to allow in situ calibration and testing of the boards. Test of all the 86 boards have been performed at CERN by F. Gonnella, V. Kozhuharov, S. Martellotti The facility will be also used to characterize the boards we have provided to CHOD and CHANTI 3 September 2014

Boards performance  5 boards have problems, 1 is still in Frascati  83/89 boards are ready  81/81 are installed  we have only 2 fully working spares  Investigations to fix problems on the remaining 5 spare is ongoing Mauro Raggi - Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati4 Time resolution [ns] Threshold offset [mV] 3 September 2014

Working and tested equipment  FEE boards: fully tested assembled and cabled up to 11 LAV  LAV 12 cables in production.  Status of TEL62 v3  5 TEL62 V3: LAV3, LAV4, LAV5, LAV6, LAV7  2 old TEL62: in LAV1 (not working so far) and LAV2 (working)  DCS to be commissioned  All the stations are connected  Software to be tested  Crate Wiener  All the crate are available and connected to DCS  Problems with the LAV11 crate (goes OFF with low voltage on 48V)  HV crate  All are installed and connected up to LAV 11.  Up to A10 crates are online (DCS?) Mauro Raggi - Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati6 3 September 2014

LAVFEE to TDCB cabling  In all the crates with a new tel62 board (A3, A4, A5, A6, A7) we have connected TDCBs and LAVFEE boards.  This is NOT an easy task, as there are plenty of noisy and dead channels.  The situation is not stable as, apparently, problems might be solved (in lucky cases) just by “massaging” the cables…  We managed to get rid of noisy channels in LAV3, 4, 5  According to me, this will be a constant problem during the run, and we will be forced to mask noisy channels, that will fill up the buffers and prevent the DAQ to work properly. 3 September 2014Mauro Raggi - Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati7 LAV stationNoisy channelsDead channels Anti-A301 Anti-A401 Anti-A500 Anti-A61? Anti-A73?

Marco’s questions I  Tests already performed with other parts of the system  Tested the Torino’s L0TP communication and primitive transmission  Tested PC FARM data transfer (only stations 1, 2, 3 with old TEL62)  Periodic trigger used with cosmic rays  Tested DCS communication  Few tests so far, more needed  LAV system has no configuration files so far  We need to understand better what is needed  End of burst data  We need a histogram of the total multiplicity channel by channel (like tdcccounters)  Does it come from the common firmware? Mauro Raggi - Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati8 3 September 2014

Marco’s questions II  Features which will be ready and available for the 2014 run  Full readout chain working for all the stations  L0 trigger based on the ToT and multiplicity in the station for LAV12  Can ask the minimum value of the ToT on leading only and leading and trailing independently for high and low threshold crossing  The missing features which will only be ready for next year, if any, and their testing in the 2014 run  Trigger based on the full set LAV (or a subsample)  Test using eth switch as concentrator can be foreseen in 2014  LED driver boards (NIM prototype available and under test) Mauro Raggi - Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati9 3 September 2014

Marco’s questions III  The remaining steps towards the 2014 run  Further DCS tests  Cabling of A12 to be finished  TEL62 commissioning just at the beginning  The required sequence of procedures when the beam will be available  Start testing data transfer for all stations (No LAV primitives in L0)  Most probably we need primitive from LAV in trigger as a stream not in veto to get some unbiased statistical sample.  Testing quality of equalization of HV and thresholds.  If necessary tune the threshold and or HV settings  Calibrating the time resolution for online (L0) and offline  Compute time offsets for each station and each channel  Start using the L0 trigger primitives in the main trigger  Start tuning the charge reconstruction algorithm with     physics  Need different charges better using kaon beam Mauro Raggi - Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati10 Muons K 3 September 2014

SAC and IRC readout Mauro Raggi - Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati11 By Venelin Kozhuharov 3 September 2014

Status of the software Mauro Raggi - Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati15 GANDALF installed and fully hardware equipped – Can lock the clock and decode the trigger (SOB/EOB) – Can send timestamps for each event – Firmware missing: circular buffer for event storage until L0 zero suppression, event formatting and custom packing Connection to RO PC: USB at the moment, no optical connection – Hardware expected to arrive soon (PCIe optical receiver), but no date – Through USB: 5 words * 32 bit/event, only TS at the moment Communication to RunControl and PCfarm tested and verified DAQ programme under development – Based on USB for the moment, to be rewritten when the optical receiver is available Not small amount of work... trying to identify manpower 3 September 2014

Conclusions  The LAV electronics is fully produced, tested, and installed  Most part of the system is ready to be connected to the TEL62  Connecting LAVFEE to a tel62 for a whole LAV station is not an easy task, we need time so we need to start installing tel62 as soon as possible  Trigger primitive are ready to be used and partially tested with L0TP  Preliminary test of integration and data transfer were already performed  The IRC and SAC are there and the readout need some software work to be performed.
