2013 Minnesota Assessment Results Mathematics, Reading and Science

2013 Mathematics, Reading and Science Results What is being released? o 2013 Minnesota Assessment Results include student performance in mathematics, reading and science from three testing programs:  MCA  MCA-Modified  MTAS o These tests measure how Minnesota students are doing on state academic standards in mathematics, reading and science. o The assessments are direct measures of student performance. 2

Mathematics assessments in grades 3-8 test performance on 2007 Minnesota Academic Standards o MCA-III was first given to students in 2011 Mathematics assessments in grade 11 test performance on 2003 Minnesota Academic Standards Reading assessments in grades 3-8 and 10 test performance on 2010 Minnesota Academic Standards o New assessments given to students for the first time o Increased test rigor is consistent with higher expectations in new standards Science assessments in grades 5, 8, and HS test performance on 2009 Minnesota Academic Standards o MCA-III started in 2012 Test Overview 3

Mathematics Grades 3-8 MCA-III o Statewide scores, in all grades, have gone up since 2011 o In 2012 students were given up to three opportunities to take the test online; highest score was score of record o In 2013 Minnesota’s flexibility waiver allowed students only one opportunity to test Grade 11 MCA-II o Statewide scores went up o Teachers, principals and districts continue to sharpen their focus on career and college preparation For further data analysis, please visit the MDE Data Center 2013 MCA Assessment Results Summary 4

Reading New assessments this year Increased rigor consistent with Minnesota Academic Standards Scores reflect additional text complexity, including making connections between two passages Increased cognitive demand based on Depth of Knowledge Minnesota Academic Standards are based on Common Core State Standards 2013 scores establish new baseline to monitor progress in student’s meeting higher Reading standards For further data analysis, please visit the MDE Data Center 2013 MCA Assessment Results Summary 5

Mathematics MCA-III Grades 3-8 Percent Meets and Exceeds 7 Scores include MCA-III tests 2011 to In 2012 up to three online opportunities were available for students and highest score was score of record. A new Mathematics test was introduced in 2011 and cannot be compared to previous years.

Mathematics MCA-II Grade 11 Percent Meets and Exceeds 8 Scores include MCA-II tests from 2009 to 2013.

Reading MCA-III Grades 3-8 and 10 Percent Meets and Exceeds 9 Scores include MCA-III tests from A new Reading test was introduced in 2013 and cannot be compared to previous years.

Science MCA-III Grades 5, 8 and High School Percent Meets and Exceeds 10 Scores include MCA-III tests from 2012 and A new Science test was introduced in 2012 and cannot be compared to previous years.

Mathematics MTAS-III Grades 3-8 Percent Meets and Exceeds 16 Scores include MTAS-III tests from 2011 to A new Mathematics test for grades 3-8 was introduced in 2011 and cannot be compared to previous years.

Mathematics MTAS-II Grade 11 Percent Meets and Exceeds 17 Scores include MTAS-II tests from 2009 to 2013.

Reading MTAS-III Grades 3-8 and 10 Percent Meets and Exceeds 18 Scores include MTAS-III tests from A new Reading test was introduced in 2013 and cannot be compared to previous years.

Science MTAS-III Grades 5,8 and HS Percent Meets and Exceeds 19 Scores include MTAS-III tests from 2012 and A new Science test was introduced in 2012 and cannot be compared to previous years.

What about the MMR and AYP? o Information about how well individual schools are meeting Minnesota’s expectations will be released in early October. o The second phase of reporting will provide information about:  MMR provides information about how well individual schools are performing –AYP results will be used to support the MMR  Growth emphasis will tell us if students are on track in academic performance. –2013 growth expectations are being finalized in the coming weeks Accountability Results 20
