Discovery of the Element Was discovered in 1772 by Daniel Rutherford It was first discovered in scotland Daniel rutherford was the main scientist only because he wrote the first medical journal. However a few english scientists discovered it around the same time, Joseph Priestley and Henry Cavendish. Also Antoine Lavosier was the first one to recognize it was a gas calling it azote. It was discovered by Rutherford by eliminating oxygen and carbon dioxide and then tested that living things could not live in that atmosphere making his come to the conclusion there must be another gas.

Characteristics of Nitrogen Atomic #: 7 Atomic symbol: N Atomic weight: Electron configuration: [He][2s^2][2p^3] Atomic radius: 71pm Melting point: C Boiling point: C Oxidation state:-3, 5 Electro negativity: 3.0 Is a trivalent in most compounds,,

Sources of Nitrogen Nitrogen in the air is the source of all soil nitrogen The earths atmosphere consists of 78% of Nitrogen, making it the main source. Soil is also a very popular source of nitrogen Due to nitrogen is in the air it really is not refined in any way because it is breathed in everyday by us.

Uses of nitrogen Nitrogen is used for various industries including chemical manufacturing, petroleum refining, synthetic fibers and electronics manufacture. In addition to those involving gaseous nitrogen, liquid nitrogen is used as a convenient source of low temperature refrigeration. Applications include food freezing, deflating of rubber moldings, and grinding tires. Some other uses in the past include the use of it in light bulbs and in explosives it was very popular.
