STFC’s National Laboratories Round Table on Synergies and Complementarity among Laboratories John Womersley Chief Executive, STFC 13 th Pisa meeting on advanced detectors May 2015

ISIS spallation neutron source Diamond Light source Central Laser Facility Harwell Science and Innovation Campus Tier I Centre Technology department MICE

Science and Innovation Campus Hartree Centre VELA and CLARA Electron linac ALICE (ERL) Campus Technology Hub CERN BIC

Key UK Strengths Semiconductor detectors Engineering and integration Management of big science projects Electron and proton accelerators High power targets (neutrons, T2K, Fermilab…) Scientific computing (but needs better join-up) Impact and innovation Public engagement

Future development Campus development at both sites University Quarter at RAL Transport improvements Considering re-engagement in superconducting magnet R&D together with Oxford University Long term aspiration for a UK FEL facility

Some observations National Laboratories provide: Technology infrastructures Now recognised in H2020 Innovation infrastructures Political visibility and impact “All politics is local” Easier if big science facilities on-site but not mandatory Need to include non-HEP labs in the ‘ecosystem’ (GSI, ESS…) good to see them represented here

Cobalt Light Systems is an STFC spin-out company

STFC Impact Reports Public engagement: two million people reached face-to-face including 300,000 school children and 17,500 teachers How CERN technology benefits the UK economy New vaccine for foot and mouth disease New method for breast cancer biopsies Cosmic Rays and carbon storage UK space industry - £40 billion by 2030 Tenant companies at Sci-Tech Daresbury delivered £35 million sales, £63 million of investment and 147 new products

Example: Analyse millions of abstracts to explore and visualise the relationships between disease, biological pathways and genes Handling volume, velocity and variety of data Big data analytics Create value from structured and unstructured data

Across Europe Working Well Collaborative approach between national laboratories in supporting major new projects: XFEL, ELI, ESS… Still Needs some work Role of CERN with respect to national labs Computing projects – very complex landscape

Thank you!
