ASTRID2 Niels Hertel Nov 2012 AARHUS UNIVERSITET Radiation shielding 5 Because of top-up operation and short lifetime we must shield the entire ring with a concrete wall. In addition, lead bricks are placed at critical points, and bags of lead pellets are used to pack closely around beam tubes etc. The bags each contain 2 kg.

ASTRID2 Niels Hertel Nov 2012 AARHUS UNIVERSITET Insertion devices for ASTRID ‘Old’ ASTRID undulator, Danfysik 2. New W116 mm period, 2 T, 14 poles. Already delivered by Danfysik. 3. New U53, 1.06 T, 87 poles, ordered from KYMA. Delivery Dec. 2012

ASTRID2 Niels Hertel Nov 2012 AARHUS UNIVERSITET June 2011: First extracted beam from ASTRID into the first meters of transfer beamline. March 2012: All of the transfer beamline and part of ASTRID 2 under vacuum. May 2012: Beam through transfer beamline and part of ASTRID2 July 2012: First turn in ASTRID2 August 2012: Many turns in ASTRID2 End of October 2012: RF cavity operational 3 November 2012: First stored beam and first accumulation in ASTRID2 Total running time with ASTRID2 until 1/ : 7469 booster cycles: = 47 hours. 11 ASTRID 2 commissioning time line:

ASTRID2 Niels Hertel Nov 2012 AARHUS UNIVERSITET RF cavity 13 The 105 MHz cavity (modified MAX IV design) was made by Research Instruments and was fitted with coupler and conditioned in Oct The transmitter is a 8kW solid state unit from Tomco (Australia).

ASTRID2 Niels Hertel Nov 2012 AARHUS UNIVERSITET 14 First stored and accumulated beam 3/ Beam current Vacuum Light !

ASTRID2 Niels Hertel Nov 2012 AARHUS UNIVERSITET 15 3/ : Vacuum effects of 0.3 mA stored current Clearing electrodes are not yet in operation

ASTRID2 Niels Hertel Nov 2012 AARHUS UNIVERSITET Diagnostics: 3 sets of striplines, 1 ring electrode, 26 button pickups, 1 FCT and 1 DCCT 3/ : 10 bunches from ASTRID stored in ASTRID2 16 Stripline signal FCT signal

ASTRID2 Niels Hertel Nov 2012 AARHUS UNIVERSITET Video diagnostics 13 Gigabit ethernet cameras are used for OTR screens and direct SR observation in both the ring and the transfer beamline All cameras can be hardware triggered, and can deliver up to 100 frames/sec and down to 4 µsec exposure time. Position and size analysis in realtime. 17

ASTRID2 Niels Hertel Nov 2012 AARHUS UNIVERSITET First beamline on ASTRID2 The first beamline, UV1, has been moved into the ASTRID2 hall. It has been provided with new optics, and is now waiting to be connected to a bending magnet port on ASTRID2. This is expected to happen in January 2013 All beamlines will be moved by the end of

ASTRID2 Niels Hertel Nov 2012 AARHUS UNIVERSITET A problem… After baking, we found that we had a leak in one of our undulator chambers. The leak takes 15 minutes from He is applied to show a leak rate of ~2e-8 mbar*l/sec. We have so far been unable to find the precise location of the leak, or to repair it with VacSeal 19

ASTRID2 Niels Hertel Nov 2012 AARHUS UNIVERSITET Commissioning: Next steps Apply clearing voltage Optimise transfer beamline and injection Adjust tunes Position the beam Scrubbing…….. In 2013 we alternate between one ASTRID 2 week and two ASTRID weeks. 20

ASTRID2 Niels Hertel Nov 2012 AARHUS UNIVERSITET Each dipole chamber has › one 150 l/s ion pump with integrated TSP › All interconnecting tubes (Ø38mm) are NEG coated Insertion straights › ID chambers are NEG coated Bake out: In-situ › Dipole chambers: ~170°C › Interconnecting tubes (NEG): ~200°C › Heating: Thin (<0.5 mm) heating foil (Soleil) › Isolation: Thin (~1 mm) ceramic “paper” ASTRID2 Vacuum 23

ASTRID2 Niels Hertel Nov 2012 AARHUS UNIVERSITET Home-built power supplies For correctors and pole-face windings we need many (~80) bipolar power supplies. These have been home-built using a modular system with 28 supplies in one rack. All supplies are ±20V, 15A. All control is via ethernet. 24
