Social Media and Self-esteem BY SAVANNA SAHARA

Overview  Question: o How does social media affect a person’s self- esteem?  Thesis: o Although social media can have positive affects, it is becoming a growing problem as people are valuing feedback from social networking sites over real life interactions.

History/Facts  Creation of the Internet  What is Social Media?  Facebook: 2004, Twitter: 2006, Instagram: 2010  Average American Time Spent on Social Media per day: o 2+ hours o 9+ hours for teenagers

Conversation  Research by University of Salford, UK on effects of social media on self-esteem  50% of 298 participants said use of social networking sites made life worst  Study done by the child advocacy group ‘Common Sense Media’ on teens and social media  1 in 5 teens said social media makes them feel more confident  1, year olds 28% said social media sites made the feel more outgoing and 29% made them feel less shy

Personal Engagement  Currently on Instagram and Twitter  Deleted Facebook

Interesting Points  The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery surveyed 2,700 doctors and 1 in 3 of them saw a spike in surgery requests for 2013, since social media was becoming more popular  13% of surgeons saw patients who mentioned procedures because they didn’t like appearance on Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat  Only 5% of women naturally have the body type that American social media portrays

Conclusion/Solutions  Social media can effect a persons self-esteem negatively if a person becomes too reliant on the content they get from it  People need to limit their time on social networking sites  People need to be aware of the strong effects social media can have on our feelings and realize that social media isn’t everything
