When In 1879, Thomas Edison discovered a carbon filament in an oxygen-free bulb glowed but did not burn up for 40 hours. He eventually produced a bulb that could glow for up to 1500 hours.

Why It was invented to replace candles and oil lamps. It was also invented to produce light for extended periods of time.
