Murals SOCIAL COMMENTARY THROUGH ART

Introduction raising-awareness-for-autism-research

Autism Awareness - Artist: Anthony Hernandez -Social commentary on autism- mural as a way to give back and give attention to the cause. -Artist is not trying to get fame- he wants to bring awareness. -He notes that the picture is recognizable so it doesn’t need explanation- he tries to make his work easily accessible.

Water Pollution in the James River - Drains are part of the James River Basin Partnership- a community of anonymous artists all working to raise awareness for one cause. -Social commentary on water pollution- storm drains lead to our rivers. -Artists are trying to make us aware that soapy water, litter, grass clippings, oil and other pollutants that end up in storm drains can impact water quality and river life.

Endangered Sea Animals -Artist: David Dunleavy -Social commentary on endangered species and the need to protect them -The artist wants people who see the murals to feel inspired to spend time at the ocean and engage in wildlife preservation efforts.
