WHAT IS IT?  Cardio = of or relating to the heart  Vascular = of or relating to blood vessels  Cardiovascular fitness = the ability of the heart, lungs and blood vessels (cardiovascular system) to deliver oxygen-rich blood to working muscles during sustained physical activity; how well and efficiently your blood circulates through your body  “HIGH” Cardiovascular fitness Heart functions “WELL”  “LOW” Cardiovascular fitness Heart functions “POORLY”

WHY DOES IT MATTER?  This is the leading cause of death for both men and women.  In 2008, over 616,000 people died of this disease. This disease caused almost 25% of deaths—almost one in every four—in the United States.  In 2010, this disease alone was projected to cost the United States $108.9 billion.
