Essay Plan Men Should Weep

Task  Choose a play in which a character is seeking the truth, avoiding the truth or hiding the truth. Explain to what extent the character achieves this aim and discuss how the dramatists uses the situation to reveal important aspects of the characters role in the play as a whole.

PCQE 1  PC- early in the play, john is perceived as a kind character through Maggie's protection of john when his sister is criticising him and Maggie backs him up.  Q- ye ken fine he’s TT; but ye canna resist a dig at him. He hasna been inside a pub since Marina was born.  E – This shows that Maggie's love for john is ever so genuine that she fails to see his flaws, or seems to deny them. Lilly brings up the alcohol issues.

PCQE 2  PC- John tries to blame jenny for leaving after he had admitted to being a poor father.  Q- “ John – an I couldna mak enough tae gie her a decent hame. So! She’s left us! She’s as guid as deid tae us “  E- John is contradicting himself- he admits blame for jenny running away but then treats jenny as if he is innocent and its all her fault she ran away

PCQE 3  PC – john is basically contradicting himself as he has children and is unable to provide for them.  Q- “a man’s got nae right tae bring weans intae the world if he canna provide for them”  E – we can clearly see that John here is being a hypocrite - he is avoiding the truth.

PCQE 4  PC – Towards the end of the play, John avoids the truth again when jenny comes home and has a very valid point that the house they live in at the moment is in a very poor state and john retaliates by accusing jenny of being a whore.  Q – “Ye can tak that back tae yer fancy man. We’re wantin nane o yer whore’s winnins here.”  E- this shows that john is hiding from the truth as jenny proves; without a shadow of a doubt, that there current home is in no state to house a family but still john is derogatory and abusive even when jenny is insisting on helping her family.
