Slide Since Last Time GridPP5 funding details finalised. –Travel budget was reduced by about 15%. –Project management funding was significantly reduced. GridPP5 Grants were issued. –FEC cases were made and accepted for all but one post. GridPP4+ hardware money was issued. –New hardware being deployed at many institutes. Slide Looking Forwards David Britton, University of Glasgow GridPP36 4 GridPP5 Hic sunt dracones In GridPP5 we need to: Deliver the computing resources required in Run-2. Evolve so that we can slay the dragons (or dispel the myth).

Slide Strategy We need to deliver the increase in resources required during Run-2, with the reduced effort available in GridPP5. At the Tier-1 the strategy is to broaden the user-base to share the cost of developments that ultimately allow a reduction in manpower. –“UK-T0” (name to be deprecated) is a key part of this strategy (Pete Clarke’s talk). At the Tier-2s, we have an ambitious plan to consolidate our sites into larger, data-centric, sites with 2+ FTE and smaller, compute-centric, sites run with only 0.5 FTE. –Andrew’s Task Force has been working on the latter (Session-2). Effectively, we need to evolve our infrastructure both to deliver the Run-2 computing and to prepare for the future. David Britton, University of Glasgow GridPP36 5

Slide More Explicitly… Over the next four years we need to: –Deliver the steadily increasing MoU commitments of resources at the Tier-1 and Tier-2s. –Maintain and improve the services we provide. –Contribute to, and in places lead, the evolution of the WLCG infrastructure. –Reduce the effort required to run our infrastructure. (WG) –Engage and support new user groups. –Engage with other e-infrastructures in the UK. –Engage with European initiatives such as EGI, EU-T0, HNSciCloud, etc. –Respond appropriately to the RCUK Impact agenda. –Prepare for the period after GridPP5 (very different? Slide New Mind Set Beyond GridPP5 the UK environment is likely to look rather different: –“GridPP6” may not exist as an isolated concept. – We may become part of a much more integrated UK e-ecosystem. Need to carefully position ourselves so any new environment works well for us: –Current emphasis in GridPP5 on engaging with new user-groups. –It helps us if other people want what we want. –It helps us to be recognised as team-players and domain-experts. “Helping others” puts more demands on our time and resources, but we believe this is an important thread within GridPP5. Over the years we have moved to a more service orientated mentality, becoming more professional…...but possibly less exciting in some ways.... Now we have the opportunity, mandate?, to tackle new challanges...and make life a little more interesting! Lets enjoy it!
