Announcements We will start working on our EL Civics this week Units this week

Agenda Grammar: unit 13 Resume- Writing a resume for homework

Resume: Words to know: Objective: My objective is to get the job.  An objective on your resume is so much more than just writing “Hey, hire me. I’m super awesome.” Make sure you point out what you can do and when you can start. Do not write in complete sentences. Keep it short. Education: List the schools you went to, what degree or certificate you earned and when you graduated. Experience: What was your job title and where did you work (also when did you work there?) What were your responsibilities? List only the jobs that relate (are similar to) the job you want to get.

Resume: Words to know: Skills: What can you do that will let you get the job. References: Who do you know that will say good things about you?

Grammar Unit 13 Can, could, be able to 1.He can speak French. 2.She can dance, but she can’t sing. 3.She could sing really well when she was a child. 4.We could ride bikes, but we couldn’t drive. 5.After my trip to Italy, I will be able to say a few things in Italian. 6.Soon, you’ll be able to write to me in English. These are all natural or learned abilities (things you can do).

Note 2 Let’s look at Note 2. She can dance. They can sing. He can’t swim. Can they run fast? He could play the piano. They couldn’t swim. Could they speak English?

Note 2 Do modals have the same form for all subjects? (yes) How do they form the negative? (modal + not + base form) How do we form questions? (modal + subject + base form)

Be able to isn’t a modal She is able to do it. They are able to do it. She will be able to do it. I wasn’t able to do it. Were they able to do it?

Note 3 Use can or sometimes am/ is/ are able to for present ability. Ex. Driving and riding. I can ride a motorbike. Languages I can speak two languages. Sports I can ski. Music and dancing I can’t play any musical instruments.

a.Can is more common than be able to in everyday speech about present ability. Can you speak French?More common Are you able to speak French?Less common b.We use be able to when the ability to do something comes after a lot of hard work. French was difficult for me, but now I’m able to have a conversation because I spent a year studying in France.

Note 3 Use can or sometimes am/ is/ are able to for present ability. After two months of physical therapy, he is finally able to walk. Be able to = hard work

Note 4 Use can or will be able to for future ability when you are talking about plans or arrangements. I can buy the tickets tomorrow. I’ll be able to buy the tickets tomorrow. I can meet him on Friday. I will be able to meet him on Friday.

Note 4 Be careful!!! Use will be able to (but NOT can) to talk about things you learn. When I finish this course, I’ll be able to speak French well. NOT When I finish this course, I can speak French Well. NOT After taking my driving course, I can drive. (something that you can learn)

Note 5 Use could or was/ were able to for past ability. Could he dance when he was a child? Was he able to dance when he was a child? ____________________I_________I________I_________> I was born.Speak two play the ski languages. Guitar. Complete the sentences: When I was four, I __________ speak two languages. When I was six, I __________ play the guitar. When I was eight, I __________ ski really well.

Note 5Could/ was/ were able to for past ability Use could or was/ were able to for past ability. General ability: Jessica could run very fast when she was young. Jessica was able to run very fast when she was young.

Note 5 Be Careful!!! Do NOT use could in affirmative statements for a single event in the past. Use was/ were able to. COULD is used for general ability. After a lot of hard work and dedication, they were able to win first prize in the 2002 dance competition. Once she was able to run to the store and back in five minutes. NOT: …they could win first prize… NOT: Once she could run to the store and back in five minutes.

Be careful! It is possible to use couldn’t for single past events. I couldn’t pass the test. I wasn’t able to pass the test. * Remember that both couldn’t and wasn’t/ weren’t able to can be used for single events in negative statements.
