11 Trunked Radio and Talkgroup Affiliation “In plain language” PRESENTED BY: Developed and produced by On Target Training & Consulting, LLC Tomorrow's Solutions Today

22 Learning Goal Student ability to understand and describe how subscribers (radios) and talkgroups affiliate to sites within the ARMER system. Tomorrow's Solutions Today

33 Learning Objectives and Evaluation Students will be able to explain, to the instructor satisfaction, how radio affiliation occurs on the ARMER trunked radio system. Students will be able to explain, to the instructor satisfaction, how talkgroup affiliation occurs on the ARMER trunked radio system. Students will be able to explain, to the instructor satisfaction, the basic characteristics of talkgroup prioritization on the ARMER trunked radio system. Students will demonstrate knowledge and retention of training material through a testing process. Tomorrow's Solutions Today

44 Table of Contents Definitions Talk groups Affiliation System programming Multicast (ISR) (ASR) Simulcast Tomorrow's Solutions Today

55 Definitions:Talkgroup: –Is simply a –Is simply a “virtual channel”. It is a computer generated code (data). It is a place holder in the radio. It is placed into the radio as part of the code plug.Affiliation: –A talkgroup or subscriber’s (radio) ability to be recognized by individual sites on the ARMER radio system. System Programming –Instructions or parameters that are entered into the ARMER infrastructure data base to provide for, and direct how, talkgroups and subscribers (radio’s) will function on the ARMER radio system. Tomorrow's Solutions Today

66 Definitions:Multicast: –One tower = one site –Separate frequencies utilized at each site Five channels (5pair of frequencies) One control channel Four voice Simulcast: –Several towers = one site –Same frequencies utilized at each site in simulcast Five Channels (5 pair of frequencies no matter how many towers) One control channel Four voice Tomorrow's Solutions Today

77 : Simulcast vs. Multicast: Simulcast: More then one tower transmitting on the same frequency at the same time. The towers operating (transmitting simultaneously) at the same time. More than one tower involved but acting as one site Multicast: Each tower acts as an independent site.. Separate locations separate frequencies. Tomorrow's Solutions Today

88 : Simulcast vs. Multicast: Simulcast: Attributes –Typically better in-building coverage More signal available (saturation) Overlapping coverage Takes less frequencies total (frequency utilization and reuse) compared to separate towers Detriments –Capacity can be taken up on more towers with fewer conversations in same geographic area. –Cost more on the front end to build (infrastructure) Typically has more channels per site to accommodate Additional radio programming considerations Tomorrow's Solutions Today

1313 Affiliation and programming Talkgroups are: – –Identified by a unique identification number – –Assigned priority 1 through 10 – –“Mains” are typically 5’s or 7’S – –Directed to work (affiliate) on ARMER sites Local, Regional, Statewide Requested (forced) Subscribers are: – –Identified by a unique identification number – –Directed to work (affiliate) on ARMER sites Local, Regional, Statewide Can be turned off (inhibit) Tomorrow's Solutions Today

1414 Affiliation and transmitting: If different level priority talkgroups attempt to push to talk (PTT) at the same time, and the sites capacity has been reached: The higher level priority gets in first. Others in the queue. The higher level priority talkgroups which are currently active will continue to work. Dependent on the priority level of the talkgroup attempting to access the system and the system programming, the system may “drop” the active conversation on a lower priority talkgroup. Tomorrow's Solutions Today

Pictorial 1 AB TOWER 1 On a two audio channel site two groups of radio’s (A and B) are currently talking on two different talkgroups. (Blue and Yellow) Talkgroup blue is a priority level 5 in the system. Talkgroup yellow is a priority level 7 in the system. If a radio on talkgroup red, a priority level 5 attempts to transmit, what will happen? AAA AAA BBB BBB C

Pictorial 2 AB TOWER 1 On a two audio channel site two groups of radio’s are currently talking on talkgroups. Talkgroup blue is a priority level 5 in the system Talkgroup yellow is a priority level 7 in the system. If a radio on talkgroup red, a priority level 5 attempts to transmit, what will happen? It will be put in the Busy Queue and will take priority over the yellow talkgroup’s next PTT WHY? AAA AAA BBB BBB C

Pictorial 3 AB TOWER 1 The YELLOW talkgroup is programmed as a lower priority talkgroup in the system. Talkgroup Blue is a priority level 5 in the system Talkgroup yellow is a priority level 7 in the system. Talkgroup red is a priority level 5 in the system AAA AAA BBB BBB CC

1818 Evaluation: In order to hear communications on talkgroups at specific sites: The talkgroup must be allowed to work at the site you are affiliated to and your radio must be selected to that talkgroup, OR The talkgroup must be allowed to work at the site you are affiliated to and some other radio is affiliated to the site on that selected talkgroup, OR The talkgroup is “requested” (forced) on the site you are affiliated to. Tomorrow's Solutions Today

1919 Evaluation: So, with all we’ve learned, explain: –How many simultaneous conversations can occur on a site with 5 total channels? –If all channels are in use, and a talkgroup with a higher level priority then one already in use at the site attempts to access the system what will happen? What if it is the same level as the lowest level priority talkgroup in use? Explain ruthless preemption Tomorrow's Solutions Today
