Culture What is Culture? Why is it important to know when conducting business abroad?

Canadian Culture What culture do you belong to? What cultural determinants/evidence supports your claim? canadian2&utm_medium=short-url&utm_campaign=articleshttp:// canadian2&utm_medium=short-url&utm_campaign=articles

Culture Culture: - Encompasses the knowledge, experience, beliefs, values, attitudes, religion, symbols, and possessions acquired by a group of people who have lived in the same region or country for generations -Passed down by each generation through education and example -New people who enter a region can assimilate quickly if their cultures are similar…ex…immigrant from UK will adapt quickly as our cultural values and languages are very similar

Subculture A cultural subgroup differentiated by status, ethnic background, residence, religion, or other factors that functionally unify the group and act collectively on each other Many immigrant communities exist in Canada today who bring and share their culture…food, language, religion Ex – Toronto – think of the many ethnic communities Canada promotes multiculturalism – “Canadian Mosaic”

Counterculture Groups who form in opposition to the established culture form a counterculture – they reject the cultural values that surround them and embrace a counterculture to oppose mainstream values and attitudes Ex: reggae, gansta, punk, emo, outlaws, etc Mainstream culture often has trouble accepting counterculture –May discriminate and show violence towards these groups –Canada doesn’t allow discrimination but in many countries, counterculture groups find themselves targets of violence and discrimination
